Re: help:location of vin plates

no chevy truck has 2 vin plates.

there is a vin on the frame right by the steering box and if its the original motor on the pside front of the block.

i had to fight with dmv one time because the vin was short and not in the windsheild. :shaking:

Re: help:location of vin plates

Just call your local CHP office and ask questions, seems to me that they would/could answer most of your questions. had to do that with a s10 once when i swapped bodys. they checked the frame and cab numbers to see if they were stolen only. issued me a state of california VIN number and on my way I went.

Re: help:location of vin plates

the VIN is located on the vin plate as you know. This is the only 'plate' anywhere on the truck.
There is a paper sticker in the glove box with the VIN
there is a plastic sticker in the drivers door jamb on the door under the latch with the VIN.
there should be a partial vin on the frame rail in 2 places, both on the passenger side frame rail, both on the top side, one of them under the cab, the other by the steering gear box. Some reason, not all trucks got the frame one, and they weren't always right either. On my longhorn, the frame is one truck older than the cab, yet original. And on my burb, there is no vin on the frame at all.

Re: help:location of vin plates

if that isn't good enough, then you need to find someone at your DMV who knows what they are doing. Honestly, it sounds like you were given a generic answer from someone who doesn't know anything.

people at dmv know how to use a computer, they know nothing about vehicles.

there's no VIN on the engine if it is the original truck motor.

Re: help:location of vin plates

I just registered a Blazer from out of state and had to have it verified so I cleaned off the frame by the power steering box so that they could see the partial vin and they were happy. Now on my 67 GMC extended cab truck there was no partial vin on the frame and I looked everywhere so I had to be referred to CHP. It took a month and I trailered it to them and they did the verification there. Hope this helps.

Re: help:location of vin plates

so i gave them three.the vin plate on the door jam.also the sticker thats on the door has the first two letters kinda scraped off so they "partial vinned" that.also i took a steel scrubber to my frame near the steering box and there was the partial vin there.so hopefully with the two partial vins and one clear one they will be able to use that.we will see.thanks again everybody

Re: help:location of vin plates

so apparently two partial vins and a vin plate is just not enough for californias dmv so i now have to go to chp.lovely.also on the arizona title it had said "restored" which i just found out its a "salvage" title in california.pretty pissed right now

Re: help:location of vin plates

Longhornman's info. is good but last part of my VIN was on the driver's side top of the frame (Baltimore built SWB 2WD). I believe Sameyearasminea72 (Jason) had posted a photo of the location I used to find mine.

Re: help:location of vin plates

Good luck man. I have dealt with this crap for years. Going to the CHP for verification sucks. It takes forever to get an appointment with them (at least here in So Cal it does) My DMV used the door jamb plate and the SPID, so I lucked out. Other than that, the only other vins on the truck are where LHM stated.

Re: help:location of vin plates

When I registered my 67 truck there was no partial vin on the frame, just the vin on the b pillar. I was referred to CHP to get verified and the CHP guy was very nice and only took about 5 minutes and I was out of there. I guess it does matter who you talk to at DMV and how old they are as the young ones think all vin numbers are on the dash. My 38 CHrysler has the vin number on the a pillar on the passenger side.

Re: help:location of vin plates

When I registered my truck in California, all I had was an Alabama tag receipt. I got an MP on Fort Irwin to verify the VIN plate and partial VIN on the frame by the gear box. I just took thge paperwork to the DMV. I don;t think it has to actually be the CHP, but maybe that was because I was on federal property..don't know.

Re: help:location of vin plates

Actually it can be a licensed Vin verifer, they will even go to your house to verify the vin. I think it was about 80.00 when a buddy had it done. Of course at DMV it is free.

Re: help:location of vin plates

You will usually have to make an appointment to bring the truck in and they usually only do it on certain days, at least up here.
