Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

Recently I’ve been looking into getting a third gen C/K army surplus truck (M1008) and was wondering if GM made any 67-72 trucks for Army/Navy etc.? Ive heard of a few navy trucks but im guessing they fall under the “fleet order” lable. What I want is a HD 1 ton 4x4, but I would prefer to have the 67-72 body style… Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

I was on a trip to Seattle and saw a bunch of Army vehicles on the highway. Saw a OD '71 or '72 driving with them, so they must be out there. Finding one for sale will be the challenge. Good luck.

I don't know what I'll do with it yet, there is no title, so I have to see if I can get one before I decide.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

The military branches had these trucks in service on bases or general purposes. No 1t 4wds were made yet, though. The CUCV concept started in the late`70s/early`80s.Just set a 67-72 body on a CUCV chassis.

Ive noticed a few companies that sell the CUCV's and im guessing the military has been getting rid of them, are they doing, or did they do this with the older 67-72 trucks? Also, does anyone know of these fleet ordered truck for sale in here in Canada. Maybe the Mounted police, jails or municipalities? Thanks again for the info

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

the CUCV's can still be purchased from the military through GSA auctions ot the govliquidation.com website. Of course they are all over craigslist and Ebay as well.

If you want a hardcore K-30 then get the M1008 or M1028. Most of them are low mileage, some don't run though and they have a 24V electrical with a 6.2L diesel.

www.steelsoldiers.com has a lot of info..

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

The electrical systems are actually a hybrid or morphidite 12/ 24 volt system. it has two batteries hooked in series, two alternators, one charges at 12 volts the second jumps that to 24 volts (actually around 28 volts). the injector pump and the glowplugs operate on 12 volts. it has bus bars on the pass side firewall that controls the voltages. it has a regular GM wiring harness that handles all the normal activities- lights, horn, engine control. and the addon military harness that runs on 24volts that controls the military lights, radios, and powers the love shack on the back (work hut). I worked in a national guard field maintenance shop. We were always fighting to keep those things running- they were considered obsolete by the regular army but the NG units loved them for running around! The wiring fuse blocks were known for melting from the troopies washing the floors with hoses over the years.

I see you're located in Guelph Ontario. There may not be too many old Army trucks up there, but I know plenty of places in the states that are selling what you're looking for.

I can confirm that the Mounted Police ordered fleets of 73-87 models, since they were built during my time in Flint. They were a two tone red with blue.

There would be nothing preventing municipalities from ordering fleet trucks, since we built them for railroads, power companies, etc.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

Just as any vehicle can be, GM did make 67-72's for the services, they were GSA vehicles,, not intended for combat specifications, but for everyday use. I have seen all kinds of GSA's from Aries K, Citations, minivans and I even own a Navy GSA 70 Burb. That was a great find and the SPID is pretty cool.

Pritch,
Did that truck come from AZ? Looks familiar.

CUCV's are pretty cool, I used to drive one in Germany and had one in VA, as posted above the services are getting rid of them, but they are still in demand in certain situations and you can still find them on most active duty posts. First truck I rode in was an old 880 Dodge. The only thing bad about the CUCV's were the Glow Plug system, we always had problems with them in really cold areas in Germany.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

Hey, thanks for all the info. The 24V system on the CUCV's doesn’t concern me too much. After looking on the GSA auctions site it appears you can buy non running trucks (perfect for a Cummins 6BT swap lol)

The one thing that concerns me is buying a GSA truck and having to arrange shipping and all the customs and border paper work involved in bringing a truck to Canada. Does anyone know of a government surplus auction in Canada? It would make things a lot easier.

Also, is this http://gsaauctions.gov/gsaauctions/gsaauctions/ the correct GSA site, I was thinking they would have more trucks listed.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

Correct me if I am wrong, but the last time i used a gov auction site, there was a lot of paperwork that needed to be done and i dont think you could close the bid without being in person with alot of paperwork even after the auction was done. The site you listed is not the one I used, it was the gov liquidation site as mentioned above, your only going to find one if the auction center was sent one, they dont hold em around like car lots, one has to be certified as coded out and then sent to auction.

I think if you really want one of these trucks your best bet is ebay or look for surplus collectors, since your up north.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

The Gov auction site isn`t full of them. They trickle in.You have to keep watch and there`s alot of competition. And,they could be sitting at any base. So,finding one close and winning it is a pretty long shot.Makes paying a bit more for a local one that you can just say,"Here`s the money",look more attractive even if it is more money.I found one locally for $1,300 because the guy was strapped for case. The axles go for more than that.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

I have a 72 Chevy swb step that appears to be a GSA truck. I have posted pics on here before. I can do so again, but I am not currently on the PC that the photos are stored on. According to the SPID, its originally a 350 V8/ auto truck, which I thought was kinda odd. It will be getting a 350 and 700r4, as that is what I already have in the barn.

I think your right about buying a truck that has already been imported to Canada. I have seen a few for sale here in Ontario but the cheapest one was $8000 and the other two were around $15K. My guess is that these trucks had been restored. I want unrestored... something that will make a good work truck. I’m not in a big rush at the moment so I think I will just keep my eyes open for either a 67-72 K20 or a CUCV. I will also watch the Canadian Gov. Surplus auctions for some older trucks.

That is pretty cool; did you ever consider restoring it all stock with the logos on it? Think that would make an awesome truck to have, 67-72 all original army truck. It would definitely be pretty rare…

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the U.S. military CUCV's can be exported. Maybe if you find one that the military took out of country. I was looking at them a while back and I'm thinking that somewhere said that only US citizens could purchase. That may have been at govliquidations.com. I didn't end up buying one and haven't looked too much at them lately so I can't really be sure if i'm even right but that sounds familiar to me.

Re: Army/Navy/Fleet Order?

A little off vehicle topic, but when I was a kid I owned a 57 Chevy sedan that was Navy issue. Unfortunately I wrecked the car, but I still have the large brass engraved plate that was bolted to the dash with all the car and Navy info engraved on it.

I think it would be kinda neat to have a military issue truck 67-72 all restored to as delivered to the military.

Maybe only US citizens can buy them, but im sure they can atleast resell them to people in other countries. The trucks that Ive seen here in Canada were definatly CUCV's from the US militray and retained their original VIN plates.

Hey pirtch, I just noticed that the "VIN" on that truck is screwd on. Is that how they came originaly? Also, do the government trucks still have a standard VIN like the ones we see daily on our 67-72?

There's plenty of CUCV's over here in the UK, whether they are imports or whether they wer released from service over here from US Airforce bases I don't know. Hell, I've even seen a couple of full on military Hummers in private hands.
