88 rear end in 87
Hi new b from Houston Tx.Had question for you guys.As the title says Im in the process of completing the 88 rear end install in my 87.I went ahead an welded the leaf spring perches on the bottom of axle since I m dropping it also.My pinion angle is set -3 degs. The problem i have is the pinion yoke is different. The one on the 88 rear end is bigger then the 87 rear end and is not swapable. What do you guys think is the easiest way to fix this problem.I was thinking about cutting off yoke from drive shaft and getting right one welded on.Also how much in and out slack has to to be in the trans yoke with the truck on ground.I have about 3/8 of an inch. Thanks in advance

Re: 88 rear end in 87
does the driveshaft have a slip yoke and carrier bearing? if the driveshaft has a slip yoke in it aside from the one in the trans your fine. what do you mean by the yoke is too big? your current u joint doesnt fit? or the driveshaft is too long now? if its just the u joint thats an easy fix with an adapter u joint.no need to cut anything up or change anything else.

No carrier bearing. Its a shortbed. On the pinion yoke yes its bigger as in the u joint cups are to small and of coarse the strap bolts are to but not worried about those. So they sell adapt u joints with 2 different size cups.If yes then where.I will try local autoparts first.

Re: 88 rear end in 87
Is this a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton? I'm just curious, as I put a 91 1/2 ton pickup rear end in my 85 and the original u-joint fit the 91 pinion yoke just perfect.

Re: 88 rear end in 87
there were 2 different u joints used in the 87. dont remember the numbers on the joints but either way as stated you can get a conversion joint its not a big deal any decent auto parts store should have it on the shelf

Re: 88 rear end in 87
When I put the '96 rearend in my '87 I used a Spicer 1350 to replace the stock 1330 u joint. If I'm not mistaken, the 1350 is the same one used on the 4WD in '87...right?

Re: 88 rear end in 87
Ok after doing some researdh I found that my original 10 bolt pinion yoke is for 1310 series u joint. The pinion yoke on the 88 rear end thats in my truck now is a bigger 3r series yoke.Totaly different. They are both 30 spline.Ok you would say why don t I just put on the original 1310 series yoke on the 88 pinion.Ok 1 for some reason it don t want to go on,2 the part where the seal rides on is smaller than the 3r series yoke.I thought all 10 bolt 8.5 30 spline pinion should be the same. Can you guys give me a hand here or point me in the right direction. Thanks
