Temp Gauge working?

I have just done an 800km trip with the new toy.
Aproblem has arisen, the temp gauge does not appear to be working and I have blown the hesd gasket.
How do I check the temp. gauge?
I have a new gasket set arriving are there any further problems I may encounter from thsi one. I dont expect a warped headis that a fair assumption?

If you have no sensor and, or wiring problems use an infrared temp gun aimed at the area around the sensor and compare it with the gauge. because the gun is sensing metal temp while the sensor is sensing the coolant temp the two reading will not be the same, but should give you an idea of the gauge accuracy. Remember this is quite an old gauge expect its accuracy to have deteriorated.

Re: Temp Gauge working?

Can I expect any other damage as a result of the overheating?
Some engines just cannot take a single overheat, such as aluminium heads.

Re: Temp Gauge working?

How long did you run the engine hot till it blew the gasket? Or, did it overheat rapidly and blow immediately?
Which cylinder(s) blew 3,4, 5, or 6?
Most likely bearing failure if the proper precautions were not taken to flush any coolant in the oil.

Re: Temp Gauge working?

If you overheated it enough that it blew a head gasket you really need to take it apart and have a machine shop check for flatness on the deck and heads as well as inspect for cracks.

You also probably overheated the rings and caused them to lose a little tension so it will probably smoke more now if you don't replace them.

Take this as an opportunity to freshen up the engine and re-seal the whole thing. You are going to have it 75% of the way disassembled so why not finish the job. Rings and bearings are cheap.

Couldn't agree more... you will be pleased with the fresh engine.

Re: Temp Gauge working?

if your going to pull the heads your better off pulling the whole motor and freshening it up. Here is a cheap way to go over everything http://www.summitracing.com/parts/FEM-MK630C-000/
