I have a 230 in my 64, and just bought a set of headers and cherry bombs for it. You have about as good of a sound as you can get out of that stock manifold, go for headers if you want it to sounds better. Either Summit or Jegs sells a pair for $130.

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

Duals with glass packs.

Back in high school (late 70's)..... I ran a 230 I6 in my first car, a '70 Nova.

I had very little money and the guy that ran our shop class was an old motor head that just loved the old stovebolt motors. He helped me make a split exhaust manifold. I then used Thrush glass packs.

Sounded sweet and had a unique sound.

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

My came with a fairly new Flowmaster exhaust system....one into two, then split in front of the rear wheels.

It sounded good, but I'm replacing that for duals with glasspacks.

I can cut it up and ship it to you if you'd like ??

That's a single exhaust, so you will need:
http://kalecoauto.com/index.php?main...&products_id=3

If it were a V8, you would need the one for dual exhaust:

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

On my 65 longbed, the previous motor was a 350 with dual exhaust and turbo mufflers with the pipes exiting under the rear bumper. I installed a 250 and just tied into one side of the exhaust and left the other side hanging for the time being. Oh, and it's 2 1/2" piping too!

My ultimate plan is to install an original Sprint6 (late 60's Pontiac) intake/manifold combo so it will have a 4 barrel and true dual exhaust...one day...

An O-pipe???? somebody please explain how this works!!! Never seen that before. Is this like a muffler bearing??

I have a stock exhaust manifold now but I talked to a local rod shop who will split the the manifold for $125.The plans include new tailpipe and a smithys or cherry bomb out the back

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

I had Smithys behind this motor and it sounded ok. It just depends on what sound you are looking for. If you want that old time rap-rap sound you might want to consider these. I used them and they were mellow till I got on it and then it was quite raspy!

You would find these in a corvette parts magazine. They used them in some Vettes.

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

I ran the long tube headers but the shorties look better on these motors.

Is there any interference issues with the shorty headers vs. the long tube? Specifically with the automatic column shifter linkage, etc. or anything else I might be missing.

I have a 250 with clifford intake and a 390 holley but still sitting with the stock exhaust manifold and simple muffler and want to make it sound better but not that raspy sound.

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

I put the long tube headers on my 230, now I wish I had used the cast iron headers from Stovebolt. I had trouble getting them to quit leaking, I got the headers from Summit latter found the cure from Stovebolt witch is a thicker exhaust gasket with studs instead of the stock bolts. The studs are coarse thread to the block and a fine thread nut to pull it down good. I have the Purple Hornies with the 3 bolt header flange. Anyway they are loud but sound good I don't have tail pipes on it yet so I think that will quiet them down a little. My neighbor came over and said what kind of motor did you put in that ole truck. I told him the one that came with it. Here's a couple of motor pic's

Re: What are you with 6 cyl using for muffler/exhaust?

I had a couple of spots on the long tube headers that were 'adjusted' by their previous owner to fit. I believe the shorth headers are better.

As far as sealing, they are a pain to get the exhaust to seal no matter whether it is stock or headers. It takes a steady mind, patience and or a second person. The copper sealant works best. There are some articles on getting the exhaust/intake bolted up correctly.

I used to run these back in high school. Nobody had a rod that sounded as good as mine. It's also a magnet for the chics.

O pipe. Funny stuff. Same place you get the rotary girder, right?

I'm still assembling, but I have Langdons cast iron shorties for my 292 and plan to run through Cherry Bombs. Yes, I'm re-living high school '75 and boy is it going to be fun!
