ash tray wont close...

Its not a huge thing but how many people have this problem? I tried uploading pics but my computers screwed up. The ash tray opens up to the right spot but when I close it it hangs open about an inch and a half... Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

That's most likely what I need.. Where do the springs hook on? Does anyone have any pics?

Re: ash tray wont close...

take the ash try out and where the pivot point is the should be a spring on each side, you will see the two holes on each side for the springs, run down to your local pick a part and snag you the two you need thats what i did to fix mine, good luck

Re: ash tray wont close...

Ok thanks. Ill check it out tomorrow. Ill try to take a pic or two of my ash tray. I don't smoke so I sovered the opening with an aluminum plate and I put a water temp guage there till I get the one in my cluster working, and there's a switch for my fog lights. When I bought the truck it had an ash tray and lighter so I know the guage isn't just weighing it down. Ill look for those spring holes tomorow thanks a lot guys

Re: ash tray wont close...

Before I move the guage anywhere ill just get rid of it. Its just a cheap-o from auto zone until I figure out how to fix the one in my dash. When I get rid of the guage I'm just goung to make a new plate and fill it with switches for all my goodies.. Fog lights, strobes that I mounted in my running lights, and so on

I looked at ashtrays in the JY cause mine was doing the same thing and they look like the Ashtray housing is riveted at the pivot points

Re: ash tray wont close...

Yes - it has springs and yes it is riveted at the pivot points (...at least mine was).

I couldn't find springs for a 73 - 87 but could find springs for an 88 and up. I ordered those and installed them; they seemed to work fine.

Re: ash tray wont close...

Hey thanlks keith. I looked at my ash tray and I have no springs.. So springs for an 88 truck will work? If I can't buy any at the parts store I could go to a junkyard but its about a half hour away and at 7 mpg its alnost not worth it till I need to get more stuff from there lol

There are screws across the bottom, a quantity of 4 I believe, that fasten the "living hinge" on the box door to the dash metal structure.

Re: ash tray wont close...

Sorry - I saw your question and got distracted -

I had the IP top pad off of my truck and the ductwork out when I was doing the ashtray stuff. That makes it quite a bit easier, as there is a big access hole directly above it. Taking the glovebox out also gives you another opportunity to get your hand in there.

Bottom line - it should come out the ashtray opening in the dash but you do have to roll it around a bit and play with it (like those bar room puzzles). Maybe sideways or at an angle.

Keep trying and I'm sure you'll find a way.

Re: ash tray wont close...

when you mean loose you were able to move it around but the air conditioner vent tube or whatever part of the HVAC stuff is back there on on the bottom wouldnt let you slide it out underneath? just pop the glovebox and you should be able to back it out that way
