Adding ABS
I want to add ABS to my 72 suburban. I know its expensive but I want it. Any ideas on where to start. I am buying new axles with from Dyna track with ABS stuff built in, just curious about what else in needed. Computer? ABS calipers? anything else?
Thanks Chris |

Re: Adding ABS
I've had ABS on 4 or 5 rigs. Never have liked it much. IMHO, If you know your truck, and how it handles, you could stop just as fast.

Re: Adding ABS
ill give you the basic things that you'll need to know/get....each wheel has a vehicle speed sensor, usually the rotor has the abs reluctor wheel built into it, and the spindle has the mounting positioned just right so the VSS is the proper distance from the reluctor wheel...then the VSS sends that info usually to the BCM, the BCM controls the ABS modulator (thing that all the brake lines go to)....thats the basics, also you'll want the pump motor for the module... the cost involved, would be alot, to retro-fit evetrything... and the wireing would be something to consider too.
cool idea tho |

Re: Adding ABS
Aren`t antilocks just an idiot-proof device? They`ve never made any difference in my stopping ability. It`s for people who freak out when their wheels lock up.Just lift your foot.People still wreck with anti-locks and people still avoid accidents w/o them.If you want then, that`s cool. It`s your truck.

Re: Adding ABS
Thats a good idea about using a chassis with ABS already on. I just need to find a newer dodge 3500 and pull the body off and start again. maybe I can find a good deal on a newer common rail cummins! Nice
I was never a fan of ABS until this winter when the wife and I were in the mountains looking for a Christmas tree in my father-inlaw's avalanche. Driving home a tree flow out of a truck in front of me and being able to steer and brake of snow and ice impressed me enough to want it on my Burb. My burb would have just hit the tree.
