clunk when turning
Anybody else ever fought a clunk while turning on these trucks(4wd)? I get one single clunk which sounds like its under the drivers floorboard when i turn and it doesnt always do it. Does it turning both ways.
This is the truck in my signature

Re: clunk when turning
i would check all your ball joints, if they are worn or lose they could be making the noise.

Re: clunk when turning
It could also be the axle joints. Though it can be hard to tell while the front end is assembled.
Jack the truck up to get one front wheel off of the ground, lock the hub. Then turn the steering wheel so that the tires are not pointed straight foreward. At that point, spin the raised tire by hand. If the axle joint is starting to get stiff, you can "feel" it. The wheel may be very hard to turn in some places or even try to straighten out. If everything seems ok, un-lock that hub and test the other side. As these joints stiffen up over the years they start tearing up the inner bearing and the guts of your lock-out hubs as well as the end of the spindle. It's a good thing to check/inspect regularly.

Re: clunk when turning
I checked my lifted steering arm with my 4 foot long 1/2 rathchet and cranked each one of the nuts down probably atleast 1 turn, then went and drove it. It only started to clunk after like 15 miles and it only did it twice so that may be my problem but i will check the others you guys mentioned.

Re: clunk when turning
sometimes when the upper shock mounts are lose for so long they will be eaten by the frame, thus when you tighten them they do nothing, this could be your problem, but with 4x4 there could be many more things that have done wrong.... its very possible that a ball joint has been knotched by some one 4x4'n the hell out of it and or not lube-ing the joints. its hard to say unless you do a tear down...
if you jack up the front of the truck by the axle or cross member you should be able to move the wheels with your hands... turn them from max to max and listen and feel for anything abnormal (turn the wheels by grabbing the wheel and musceling them around... not by using the steering wheel) |
