What does fuseable link do?

I took my fuseable link apart a month ago, and the fuse was stuck and rusted inside. I have not replaced it yet, what exactly does it do, My battery will go dead after several days of sitting, but i am not sure this has anything to do with it . I just have not found a small fuse yet to replace it. thanks

Is it the short 4-amp fuse in the little bullet like holder? If it, is for the ammeter. There should be one close to the batt and another on the driver side.

Re: What does fuseable link do?

Its a circuit protection for the electrical system. Think of it sort like a circuit breaker. In fact they have been replaced by circuit breakers on a lot of vehicles. Many people still prefer them. When the circuit gets too hot they will burn up/melt and hopefully protect the system.

Anyone who sells Bussman products should have the size. I would only use Bussman and never a foreign made one cause of the part history with the foreign made fuses and links. Just about two years ago their were a lot of TSB going around about them

Re: What does fuseable link do?

I replaced mine with a fuse many years ago and it worked fine. I did a quick search and basically found that they're used the same as a fuse but for higher amperages. Generally 30 amps or higher.

Most recommend to replace them with the same fusible link for better protection.

Re: What does fuseable link do?

thats a fuse, not a fuseable link.
Look in the FAQ in the electrical section, there's a thread on how to find a battery drain

You know, I never really thought about it until I read that, but isn't there some kind of resistance wire that must be in place before the ignition will work? I have always called that 'the fuseable link' but now I'm thinking that's not right. Does that make sense?

Re: What does fuseable link do?

in most older cars, they had a ballast resisterr, on these trucks, a resister wire.
Nothing like a fuseable link.
a fuseable link is a section of wire that will burn before the rest of the harness is damaged due to a short to ground or if something is causing too many amps to be drawn through the system. On 67 - 72 trucks, it is a piece in the harness between the battery and the junction post on the fenderwell. On many later GM cars and trucks, it was on the large post of the starter where the harness picked up batterry power to run the rest of the vehicle.

Re: What does fuseable link do?

Yeah-that's the thing I thought it was, I just always called it the wrong name for some reason. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Re: What does fuseable link do?

The rubber fuse holders are for the ammeter. A problem with them will not drain the battery. You can replace a corroded one with a universal in line fuse holder. Use a 4 amp fuse in it. There is another one in the circuit also. If the amp. meter is working it will go down a little when you turn on the lights.
