Drum Brake Rebuild

Without enough money to spend on a disc upgrade, it looks like I'm going to need to rebuild my drum brakes (all 4 corners) on my '69. I've never tried to rebuild drums (all those springs and levers and such look intimidating) but I do consider myself reasonably competent. How difficult is it for a first-timer? I do know that most of the components and maybe even the drums need to be replaced. Would it be wise to find a shop that will let me supply the parts while they supply the labor? I figure I could save some money by ordering the parts from GMCPaul or another parts supplier. Is this a good idea?

It is not really that difficult. Just take apart one side at a time...so you can look at the still assembled side to see how it goes back together. Learned the hard way on this.

It is a lot more intimidating looking than it really is. Not many shops will do work, let alone brake work with parts they dont supply, but who knows.

It is a good idea to replace everything you can in there while your there. Cylinders, spring kit, adjuster kit, shoes (naturally) and turning the drums...you might actually be suprised how good the old drums will work.
