confused. differentials

I was hoping someone could help me with this.

If I take off from a stop light, real quick like it'll let one tire loose. If I'm stuck in the mud/snow and romp on it, it'll spin both tires, hell it'll spin all 4 and look pretty sweet.

This is all on a 1979 K10, I don't understand why it will spin both tires on say ice but it'll do the one-wheel-peel on the dry stuff.

Can someone explain this to me?

Re: confused. differentials

I'm assuming when in the mud and snow your stuck by the way of high centering. So no tires are touching the ground. And on the dry stuff one tire is planted on the ground, the other is spinning unable to get traction.

Re: confused. differentials

Open diffs will occasionally spin in the loose stuff if the truck is straight and everything is perfect. If you have a posi traction rear end it is possible that the clutches are worn out and not grabbing well on the dry stuff. Just my two cents.

Re: confused. differentials

I know no history at all on the rear-diff.

New motor a few years before I bought it and the transfercase was rebuilt and it was painted. He didn't mention anything about it. There was a huge shear or scratch looking thing inside the differential that looked like it shoudln't have been there, almost like something broke and flew off?
