1975 Indy 500 GMC build

Hello,
This is My build thread where I will post any progress I have and keep you guys updated. I cant make a ton of progress on it until at least summer. I am finishing a house, working and re building my 87 z24 cavalier hatchback as well as have a 6 mo. old daughter and limited funds.
It will take a few years to finish.

I have a press kit for my truck and I will post to follow.

What I know about this truck:
It has been in the family since new.
It is all original.
My great grandfather purchased it from one of the race teams after the race, He worked in promotions and knew a lot of people, I am told.

I am working very hard to uncover the history of my truck and production numbers.
my press kit says GMC will provide 26 pickup trucks, crew cabs, suburbans and rally wagon and Vandura vans for general transportation, safety and emergency vehicles.
I was told by gm they had 4-6 red crew cabs at the race (I can not remember the exact number they told me).
This being said there could only of been a couple of trucks like mine made for the race.
I wish I could get an exact break down on the trucks.

Re: 1975 Indy 500 GMC build

I Have read several places that there were no replicas made this year. The press kit states there were. Can any one confirm this? I have never seen another truck like mine and if 500 were made someone would have one as you can find a picture of all the trucks 76 and up online. I know 100% my truck was at the race because a family member bought it there.

Re: 1975 Indy 500 GMC build

Here are some pictures of my truck. I have posted some on another thread but they are hosted on Photobucked and I wanted to use this sites hosting.

MY truck is numbered 27 (was put on at the race) why i do not know as it says there was 26 trucks at the race.... There must of been something numbered one.... Maybe the pace car?

Re: 1975 Indy 500 GMC build

Looking at the pictures posted above I noticed there are two diff trucks one has a hood ornament and one does not also one says tilt wheel equipped. That means that including my truck I have proof that at least three white ones were made.......

Sad to see such a rare truck in such a condition. I hope you can restore her to her original glory. There really should be a registry for those trucks...

Prior to starting on the resto, use a quality digital camera to document the graphics. Use a ruler to get the graphics scale in the photos. Talk to a graphic shop to determine the best way to repro the graphics if you're going with vinyl. This will probably be the best way to repro the design. I'd suggest paint is cost prohibitive.

Keep the forum informed of your status.

That's good thinking. Make sure you can get the graphics done, before you take them off. Don't want to have a moment at the end.

Re: 1975 Indy 500 GMC build

Belive me I won't tear a thing off unless I have all the stickers ready to go and I will measure where they all are exactly and take hundreds of photos from every angle of everything. I think I will replce most the sheet metal after all as I want to get it done in this life time. I already have a dent/rust free bed to switch on and I just need doors hood and fenders I will snag them from the local j/y. I will leave the stickers on the parts I remove to use for reference.
