New engine for Screamin, but which one?

So, I'm looking at a new powerplant for Screamin' I already have a fresh 700R4 and 3.73 gears installed. I absolutely love my 307 and am not looking for the typical fanboy responses of "drop a 350 in it" I dont need gobs of power, but I do like to pi$$ off a Honda or 2 now and again.

So my options are pretty open. I can either rebuild the 307 with the assorted aftermarket goodies and some Vortec heads, I can build a 383 stroker optimized for pump gas, maybe toss in a 5.7L EFI Vortec or go with an LS engine swap.

I want a dependable driver and am not afraid to jump head first into the electrcal, and fuel mods necessary for the EFI swaps...

So basically, with all things considered, which engine would get me the most bang for the buck?

  • 307
  • 383
  • 5.7L EFI Vortec
  • LS Gen IV/V 5.3L / 6.0L

Thanks

Bill

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

I voted stroker but would suggest you think thru a combo optimized for pump gas and EFI.Then you would have the best of both worlds, lot's of power (TQ and HP)with liveable fuel manners(Pump gas and resonable milage)>You may need to build the motor and run a carb while your budget catches up but I think this would be the ultimate setup for streetable power with good driveability.

Oops I meant to vote for the 6.0. Because they are more reliable and bulletproof. More $$ as well.

Hands down, a Vortec 6.0L. Dollar for dollar, they offer the most power and reliability of the choices given.

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

I voted for the 5.7L Gen3 , was just supprised I am just 1 of a very few lol...

Of course if everything lines up as far as the time, money, and parts gathering and foreseeing any other issues I would say the LS Gen IV/V 5.3L/6.0L option would be the way to go...

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

4.8 or 5.3. Lowest price of ls's, best availability, keep the EFI, use stock harness and fusebox, keep fly by wire if it has it for the cruise control. Good milage, great reliability, starts first crank even when below freezing, good availability of parts, info and such. Good luck. By the way, i'm in the middle of an install of 2005 5.3 into my 68 C20. Jim

WOW, alot of LS fans...Jim if I go that route I'll hit you up for some advice

SBC383RULZ I'd be interested in the specs on your engine....

68LONGBED.....I'm afraid I'd constantly be lookin for the other 2 cylinders....I had 4.3 in an S10 and it was a fun little motor...Dont; think it has enough ass for a fullsize though...

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

Hey screamin. I voted for the 383.

My cousin builds motors (he's the real deal at a fraction of the cost)
he used to have his own engine business now he does it out of his house. All his machining equipment came home with him. He now is the lead mechanic for a local very large nursery here near us (cant beat the benni's). Does a motor a week for them on the side plus does all my engine work.

If you need an engine builder I can hook you up with him.
Also, I have a hook up on picking up 6.0L w/trans still hooked to them from a company in Portland that pulls them out when they are new or close to new.. I dont remember I just know my buddy keeps bugging me to come get one for my 57.

So, If ya figure out what you want send me a PM I might be able to help ya save some $$ around here.

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

http://sdpc2000.com/details/gm-goodw...gines/12530283 2100$, one piece rear main seal, roller cam, vortec heads, 4 bolt and better exhaust seats (3/4- 1 ton version). Made 255/335 through crap injection and intake manifolds, emissions bs, retarded gm factory tune, crap exhaust manifolds, and a 2" downpipes into a 2.5" peashooter single with a trash can muffler. Net, so all accesories in place as well. Runs on 87 all day. I guess I could get maybe 300/360 with longtubes, carb intake, and my q-jet rejetted.

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

if i didn't already have a bad boy 406sbc ready to drop in, i'd rebuild the rework the nice 74,000 original mile 307 in my 72 burb with a 400 crank and make it a 325 or whatever it comes out to (stock bore). a roller valvetrain and perhaps a tbi (454 unit with modified to match sbc manifold).

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

where do you find pistons for that? 335 strokers (305 based) are somewhat easy to piece together, but either way you'll be far behind economically and power wise to a 350. They look identical too

Hey Screamin I'd call Sinisterspeed about that 6.0/trans deal. I might have to myself!

I'm not the kinda guy that usually does this, but with all due respect................

unless you never drive over 50mph there is no way you could get more than 11mpg on a non-OD 4.11-geared 383

btw: I voted for a GenIII 6.0/5.3 motor, although you get more bang for your buck initially with a 383, I think the genIII will pay off in the end.

Re: New engine for Screamin, but which one?

6.0L, hands down, if you're up to it. Good economy with your OD, lots of power and torque, infinitely adjustable if you keep the EFI and DIS, and they're just cool! Not to mention easier starting and tons of parts availability if you wanna go whole hog.
