wicked squeal from transmission, wondering why
i just made a 900 mile trip last week from Massachusetts to Indiana and my '68 K10 ran beautifully the whole way. but after i got i got her going the next day and for about a minute or two after i get her on the road its making this nasty squealing noise when i shift through the gears and after a minute or two it goes away. i'm just wondering if its something i should be concerned with or if there is anything i can do to fix it or if it will just go away.
thanks for your help. |

Sure it's the transmission and not a belt slipping?

Standard Transmission? Sounds like a throw out bearing. I would check fluid in trans just to be sure also. Noises hardly ever go away, usually will get worse as time goes on.

usually when they go away, is about the time you are calling for a wrecker.

Re: wicked squeal from transmission, wondering why
i guessed transmission because it starts happening when i get her going and is worst in third gear, but i really have no idea. i think i'll start by checking tran fluid and i don't really know how to check to see if a belt is slipping significantly like that, besides if it is just really loose. i appreciate your help and if anyone has any other ideas that would be awesome.

Re: wicked squeal from transmission, wondering why
oh yeah, i'm not familiar at all with vehicles like this, this baby is still new to me. but i'm guessing that a throw out bearing would not be easy or cheap to fix. any ideas on how to check that?

Another vote for belts, check tightness, and overall condition of them

Re: wicked squeal from transmission, wondering why
Well, the throw out bearing shouldnt make any noises when the clutch is UP.....you will hear it when you depress the clutch to shift. u joints can squeal like he!! if they are on the way out....just a thought?
