14 Bolt SF

Came across a 14 bolt sf out of a 87 2500 4x4.Has anybody ever swapped one into their 2 wd , are they wider then my 1/2 ton 10 bolt? Can you just get the axles drilled to 5 on 5 pattern? Searched quite a bit and never really found an answer.Maybe not even worth it in the long run i don,t know.I bought another motor for my truck and i need to get rid of the 308 open rear for sure but now i,m just confused.I have a 10 bolt in my truck,a 12 bolt posi carrier in my garage (no gears) and now this 14 bolt but not sure which way will be the best way to go

Hey Ont Guy 38

Even if you Re-Drill axles The center Hump on the Axle probably will not fit Those nice rims you got.
Your 12 bolt would be the Best Choice/ Money wise.

Re: 14 Bolt SF

That's a pretty but diff to be putting in a 2wd. I have a 14 bolt in my 1978 k20 and its beast. I would stick with a stock one or a 12 bolt or even a ford nine inch.

Re: 14 Bolt SF

I have a 14 bolt FF in my C20 stock...it's a good axle and won't let me down...the 14 SF is still an alright axle and will do fine in your truck...it should be the same width and bolt up just fine...the only problem is the bolt pattern is 8 lug...you could take and swap 3/4 ton control arms and spindles up front and leave your 1/2 ton springs in ...that would give you 8 lugs up front...

Re: 14 Bolt SF

Like texasfunk said a SS454 rear end would work for you, but may be hard to find. Though if you could find replacement or aftermarket axles for that application, score a 88-98 3/4 ton 14 bolt SF, and you could probably swap the axles and end up with what you want. I don't know that there's enough room on an 8 lug axle to drill it for 5x5.

Re: 14 Bolt SF

SF 14 bolts also came in 6 lug on the light duty 3/4 tons in 88-98. Like they said 5on5 pattern is do-able since the 454SS trucks ran them but I dont know if you can just redrill what youve got to get your 5 lug.

Re: 14 Bolt SF

Don't recommend redrilling for a 5x5 pattern. From what I've seen there's not enough meat to be safe. Suggest you go 6 lug all around.....there's enough parts in wrecking yards to do this inexpensively or get a rust bucket and transfer what's needed.

The 14 bolt SF also came in the 1500 4x4s with the Heavy Duty Chassis. It's a 1500 badged truck with the light 3/4 running gear. The light 3/4 was the badged 2500 with 6 lug tires.

Re: 14 Bolt SF

It is a 6 bolt , you guys are right tho I should probably stick to the 12 bolt or the ford 9 inch.I just seen it for sale and knew that 454ss had that in it so i thought i would ask if anybody has ever done the swap to a 2 wd

No I am not. I am talking 88-98 trucks.

I have 2 1995 1500 Z-71s.

One is a HD and one is standard duty.

The HD has different drive shafts, engine oil cooler, 2nd trans cooler, etc. Also has the 14 bolt SF axle.

And, my 1500 HD has a gvwr of 6,700. The other 1500 has a gvwr or 6,200.

But they are both 6 lugs also.
