New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
Hey guys, I just joined the forum and figured I would say hello. I recently picked up a regular cab 1986 GMC C3500 dually with 57,000 miles. It has a 454 paired to a TH400. The truck needs a little work, but overall it is a very solid clean truck. There is only one hole in the passenger side rocker and the rest is just surface rust. The game plan for this rig is to be a Jeep hauler. I hammer on my Jeep and started to worry about driving to the trails, wheeling for 6 hours and then driving home. I daily drive the Jeep so this truck is just going to be another toy. I only work 6 miles from home so the 454 could DD if the Jeep breaks haha, but I hope not.
I'll post some pictures if I can, but being as this is my first post I doubt it will let me. |

My sister lives in Poughkeepsie, small world. Sorry to hear bout having a Jeep, (I hate them!!) but the truck is pretty cool. Shouldn't have any problems for a tow vehicle, other than the mileage.

Haha, small world indeed! Come on man, how can you hate Jeeps!? Thanks for the compliment on the truck, I'm pretty happy with it (so far). I have big plans for this old square body, but my priority is the Jeep. That has to go down the road AND play on rocks.

Re: New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
No idea about the MPG's yet. I just put a new gas tank in last night and have only drove it a little bit today. It hasn't been tuned up, the timing os a bit off, I need to go through the wiring, all the fluids and get new rear tires. I'm hoping to get about 6-8 mpg's with two Jeeps on a 5th wheel behind it, but that is probably wishful thinking!

Re: New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
I used to work with a guy from Walden. I'm over that way every so often. My father works on that side of the river running gas.
Speaking of gas..... I have to replace both tanks in this truck. I got one done yesterday. here are some pics of the progress. Does anybody know where to buy the fuel tank support assemblies that bolt to the frame? I bought two, but they were $73 each. Thats pricey when I got new tanks for $32.70 each! I had to make a bracket to get one of the straps to fit. I guess the company I ordered them from only had one size bracket.

Looks like a fun project! Welcome to the board.
So, is Kenbo-Slice an alter-ego of Kimbo Slice?

Re: New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
Kenbo-Slice is a nickname I have picked up. I am a bit more fair
than the better known Kimbo, haha! The tanks I got from carpartswholesale.com or something like that. They are 16 gallon instead of 20 gallon, but for the price I made them work! Lastly, thanks for all the welcomes guys!

Re: New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
Got a link to the tanks, or at least their part numbers? I did a couple quick searches on their site and only found them for the usual price of $100 and up.

Welcome, i see you have quickly figured out that all you need to work on these old trucks is a 1/2in socket. LOL

Re: New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
Sorry man, Carpartswholesale had a sale going last month when I bought them. I figured the tanks weren't in high demand so the price was still good, but I was wrong. I guess it's good that I bought two when I did, but I appologize for getting you excited! I just checked three sites, and they're all the same price.

Haha, sorry. If I was a member on here earlier, I would have posted the deal that day.
I'll make a note to do so in the future. -When good deals are found, spread the word! Got it.

Re: New guy here! 1986 GMC C3500.
Half a dozen or so!!!? Damn, thats quite a stockpile haha. I'll keep an eye out for you if I see any more sales on tanks. The support assemblies though..... Those are tough to get. The bracket that bolts to the frame and holds the tank. Looks kind of like a "J". Dealers carry them ($87 each) and OEMHQ.com has them for $73 each. Thats where I bought the two I have, but at $73 a pop I would rather fabricate my own. Being a welder, that is always an option but time is a constraint. Wheeling season is around the corner, and I need to get this rig ready to pull a 32' trailer with a couple Jeeps on the back within a couple months.
