crank vent tube at the top rear of a 60 283 block

is there a common way to modify it to a pcv valve setup without involving the valve cover?

my o/l says the truck has a vibration at 65 mph..I said its ok, it goes away at 90.

pcv on the oil filler tube.but i think you still need a breather.

I am thinkin I can adapt a line from the hole the tube is in. I haven't pulled it yet to see. Just thought I'd ask before hand.

At the rear of the block you are referring to what was commonly called a "road draft" tube. Came out of the block and then ran down the back next to the transmission.

Markeb01 did a little write up on how he did his. It did involve the valve cover, but is pretty much hidden. You will need to have a breather somewhere on the engine if you switch to a PCV valve.

Later 283-327s had a hose connected to the rear vent thru a pcv valve with a breather cap on the fill tube stant makes a slip on breather cap

If you have a 283 engine with the road draft tube in the block, you can run breatherless valve covers with not modifications at all. You need an adapter that bolts into the draft tube hole in the block in order to connect the pcv valve. The other end of the hose should connect to the base of the carburetor (full manifold vacuum). You'll also need an intake manifold with an oil fill tube and breather cap. You should not use one of the later designs with the pcv valve connected to the fill tube. These should only be used with vented valve covers. Even with a breather on top, if the pcv valve is just below the breather it will draw air in from the breather and the engine will not have adequate ventilation of crankcase fumes.

This is the way I did my '283', using the oil filler tube in the front of the intake manifold as the breather point - and the old draft tube as my PCV route - up to the aircleaner, via a "T" just after the valve - on the way out.

So far - So good, at least in particular application, with a two-barrel carb.

thanks for the replies fellas.
I like the pcv and grommet idea. I'm gonna try that first. I had a 600 edelbrock and aluminum intake given to me but I don't wanna lose the oem valve covers so I may just forgo the free intake.

Is the intake an Edelbrock Performer? It has a provision for an oil fill tube that can be milled out. That's what I did on my 327. As for the pcv setup, I have the elbow Mark mentioned on the back of the engine, then a short hose to an inline pcv valve, then a short hose vacuum port at the bottom the Edelbrock carb.

yeah it has the flat spot and I may just do that. The old manifold has no vacuum ports and Im goin power brakes.
