You guys know if these come with a factory primer, or will I need to get it painted first?

I have a gmc tailgate on my chevy and wanted to switch it out at some point.

I just wanted to put off paiting anything until I can paint the entire vehicle, which probably will not be for some time.

all aftermarket parts come with a black EDP primer coating, you can leave it as is for awhile, but it won't have the protection that paint provides. Most average guys doing paint jobs will just scuff it up and prime over it once they begin the paint process, not many strip it down to bare metal...

BTW, I would use one of our board vendors for a better price and customer service. Check out the vendor section for names...

also, if you are going to use it as a real truck (i.e. put things on the tailgate, sit on it etc..) then I would look for a good rust free original. The aftermarket metal is softer and will bend if you use it very hard at all. For that price someone on here will ship you one, check the parts board.

This is what happens to them when you don't prime them immediatly.

Yeah that would be your best bet if you plan on using your tailgate at all.

surface rust on the gate is ok, the bottom rot should and bow should be avoided.

I wish i had a side shot. The welds on the sides split and it's bowed out of its mind.

I sold a nice straight (already blasted and primed) gate to a guy at the last show. He said "well I can get a new one for $156" so I said go get it then, you won't be happy... I was asking $200 and might have sold it for $175 or so to him...

I would ask if it was bent or damaged before they shipped it, they sold me a damaged grill and shipped it anyway!!!!

there are vendors and there are advertisers, If you clink on the link it helps the site (i think), our vendors are die-hard truck guys as well and won't steer you wrong like others (check review board).

MS is right...aftermarket tailgates are for looks only. I ended up with one on my 72....it's a real peice of work...I can bend it with my hand. As far as I know, there is not one aftermarket tailgate made for our trucks that is anything close to oem in strength.

There are good and bad aftermarket gates. I have had a NOS gate from 1969 and also have a repop gate in my posession currently. They weigh exactly the same amount and the thickness of the metal is the same. The only difference is the repop has nicer welds...

I have seen an older repop w/out the letters that was so thin metal you could bow it by sitting on it....saw a guy demonstrate...

However, the ones stamped Chevrolet were done to original specs only nicer welds. As I understand from Tri-Pro the newest smooth gates are as nice...just be careful where you get it...
