3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

I have a 1972 K-10, 350, 3 on the tree, 35-12.50-15 tires, running 3.07 front and rearends. The motor is strong but it`s geared to high. I think for the tires I`m going to go with 30-10.50-15 when the others wear out. I thought maybe someone on here had the same problem and could give me some good info. Thanks.

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want better gas mileage or do you want to have more power to the wheels?

Re: 3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

I would say if you're going to a 30" wheel the go to 3.73. That's the same set up I have on my '88 4x4 w/ a 350/350 and I get about 15mpg average. I still have decent power. I'm not gonna win any drag races, but it's enough for me.

I just want to be able to pull my bike trailor that hauls 2 Harleys (about 1400 lbs) and not have to down shift when I hit a small hill.

I would go with the 4:10's but I would also go with like 33" tires....in my opinion the 30" will look to small on your truck....JMHO

Re: 3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

30's aren't that bad. I have the stock size tires on my '71 and they are 28.8" and they don't look bad. I did put the 30's from my '88 on my '71 4x4 to see how it would look. I thought it filled up the wheel wells nicely.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

oops, I misread your message. I didn't see you were wanting to put 30" tires on it. 3:07 would be fine with 30" tires. 3:73 would be better for pulling with 30" tires, and 4:10 would almost be overkill for them. I agree that you should atleast have some 33"s so the truck doesn't look rediculous without some bigger tires under a lifted vehicle. Trevor

Re: 3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

3.73 is a good compromise in a 1/2 ton truck. if it was a 3/4 ton and i was pulling loads with it, i'd want the 4.10. either rear gear with an overdrive will be waaaaay better than a 3.07 for solo highway driving.

Re: 3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

on a 30" tire, I would agree that a 3.73 will give you the best all around power. If it were mine, I would swap the 35's for the 30's that you are lookin at, & see how she feels. You are running 3 series gears, & can swap to a 3.42 gear set without swapping carriers(a little cheaper in the long run). The 33" tires will take 3.73 to 4.10 gears to be "right with the world", & you will be 4.10-4.56 with 35" tires (to get the best power). Best of luck, crazyAL

Re: 3.73 or 4.10 what would be the best

If you have a 3 speed transmission 3.73's, if you have over drive 4.10 would work. If you want gas mileage stick with 3.73 regardless of what trans you have
