Do I need this heads? Tell me if they look good...

Going to build a motor for my truck someday and Im collecting parts. Found some heads. They were 'redone' at some time. (20 Years..lol) never been on a motor. They have 'the big valves' '4barrel heads'. Are they somthing I should put on my budget 350 build? Im looking to spend NO MORE than 1000-1300 dollars.

So far Ive found myself

4bolt main block no machine work yet
edelbrock high rise alum. intake (not sure exactly what type)
500cfm carb. (just rebuild may try to find somebody to trade for slightly larger holly or edlebrock.
still undecided on the rest
I THINk I have a steel crank, how can I tell (was told it was out of BIG truck)

He's also got some heads just like em(too lazy to run #'s) but I can.

there not 'redone' yet he said he'll trade me for my extra qjet carb.

good trade what should I do

He wants $150 for worked heads (ones pictured)

Re: Do I need this heads? Tell me if they look good...

They're an ok buy, unless they do in fact have the 2.02" intake and 1.6" exhaust valves.

75cc chambers with the smaller valves, 1.94" intake / 1.5" exhaust will be the low compression, more restrictive flowing "smog" heads. Those are common.

just by looking at the pics they look like they haven't been machined very well.

Re: Do I need this heads? Tell me if they look good...

aset like that around here freshly ported polished with screw in rocker studs go for about $200-$250 a set

those heads look like they came out of a junk pile and someone took a sanding disc and wire brush to them

x 2. Another thing to consider is how long before you actually build a motor. If it is not going to be for a while, why bust out $150 now for them to sit on a shelf? There will be plenty around when you actually are going to start. Good luck with whatever you do.

Re: Do I need this heads? Tell me if they look good...

Those definitely do not look like 2.02's. 2.02's have about 1-2 credit cards width between the valves in the combustion chamber.

Be wary buying old heads. Old heads made during the years of "leaded fuel" do not have hardened valve seats. New unleaded fuel in old heads without additives contribute to increased wear in the seats.

Re: Do I need this heads? Tell me if they look good...

If it were me I would pass on them. They are not 2.02s and look to be just standard truck heads. To top it off they look to be in need of some pretty good machining due to the rust pictured and probably hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel. Another unknown factor is how were the valve guides done? Knurled or bronze guides installed? You can probably buy "off the shelf" heads from summit or jegs cheaper than you would have invested in those when done. WES

Well, the heads shown look very suspect. It looks like somebody took a die grinder to them to knock the patina off the gasket surface. At the very least, you'd need to get them magnafluxed and probably decked due to the shoddy grinding on them. Also, if they've been setting for 20 years, it wouldn't be a bad idea to get new valve seats. IMO, it would definitely be in your best interest to invest in some good heads. You can get a set of Patriot Vortecs and run your old style manifold if you want.

They're about $650 a set fully assembled. You're probably going to pay half that to have those old heads magged and decked (more than that if they find out something else is wrong with them). I have a set of Patriots and have zero complaints. You can run a roller cam setup if you want and you'll get much better flow than those old style heads. Vortecs are going to be the best bang for the buck. I'm fairly confident everyone will agree with me there, I wouldn't spend the money on older heads, but that's just me.

Re: Do I need this heads? Tell me if they look good...

Hello, those heads look like 882 heads. Most all the old open chamber heads are prone to cracking. I would wait and see what piston you are going with. If you build a flat top motor and go with those heads you are going to have a very low compression ratio. Even if you deck the block and slice the heads and you use a thin head gasket you will be lucky to have 9.1 CR. JMO
