Got my Painless Wiring headlight relay harness

My harness kit arrived yesterday. Works with hi/lo sealed beams and H4 bulbs. Made by Painless. Plug and play, only need to wire up 12+ from the battery and the ground. Even comes with screws to mount the relays. Comes with a weatherproof fuse holder and 2 weatherproof relays. Made in USA. 40 amp Relays are stamped Hella - Made in USA.

Wow, I can't believe they get that kind of money for that harness. Guess I should start making some of those!

Yep, just go to a couple of websites and purchase what they sell for a high price for small change and go for it. Then advertise, and pay for product protection and then you have the price that they are selling it for.

Re: Got my Painless Wiring headlight relay harness

A while back, I was in Fort Worth and on a whim stopped at the Painless facility. I talked with several folks and was taken on a tour of the manufacturing floor. I was impressed with the quality of materials, competency of the employees and the ability to quality test each harness prior to shipment. In the back was a 65 Mustang they were using as a test mule for a replacement harness. I was told each harness built for a specific vehicle was developed by using an actual vehicle to ensure proper fitment. As a result when I need a harness, I'll consider Painless.

Re: Got my Painless Wiring headlight relay harness

I made mine for about $10 worth of parts. That's a lot of product protection I could charge for!!

Re: Got my Painless Wiring headlight relay harness

The biggest advantage of this is making up the voltage loss to the headlights, thus making them brighter. In OEM form, power runs from the battery to a distribution block on the firewall, through the bulkhead connector, through the fuse block, through the headlight switch, through the dimmer switch, back through the bulkhead connector, THEN finally to the lights. Massive voltage loss!! And through a very tiny wire to boot! This makes it dangerous when upgrading to halogen or H4's. I've seen headlight switches melt down from being overloaded.

With this setup, power comes from either the battery or the d-block on the firewall, through a rely and straight to the headlights. The wires that, in OEM configuration, originally ran to the headlights, now trigger the relays to turn on. I gained almost a full 3 volts to my headlights by doing this!! The difference is HUGE!

A diode can also be added that will turn on both low and high beams when switched to highs.

I don't think I've ever heard negative things about their stuff, I've used their main harnesses before a few times. I was just surprised at the price of this particular one.

Re: Got my Painless Wiring headlight relay harness

What I'm planing on doing it taking some voltage measurements before and after the install, and then with some higher power bulbs.

I know they're are cheaper kits out there, but that's not what I wanted and I have so many projects going I don't really want to spend the time to gather all the parts and make my own harness. So to me it was worth it.
