DD letters on a '60-'66 Chevy/GMC VIN tag

What do the two capital letters "DD" on the top portion of a factory VIN tag on a '60-'66 Chevy/GMC truck? Not all of mine have them, but several do. I have seen this on the VIN of many light-duty trucks, including C10, C20, C30, K10 & K20.

Funny...I was thinking Designated Driver. I have looked for this information before, to no avail. Maybe one of the '60-'66 Chevy/GMC truck experts will chime in soon. Thanks for your Sunday morning humor...I got a laugh out of it.

Doubtful, since I have it on several trucks, that are from all over the country. Maybe it stands for Domestic Dealer, but I would like to know for sure.

Re: DD letters on a '60-'66 Chevy/GMC VIN tag

I thought it stood for Double Duty. I could be wrong though. I had Cab and chassis trucks (64 and 65)from the utility companies and they all had the DD

When I bought them all the frame rails had to be extended on the rear and their was not one single bed bracket on them. in fact on one I had to drill the holes. I think they were used mainly for commercial trucks. Like ice cream vehicles, mile trucks, utility trucks etc.

Oh yeah and my 65 only came with one visor over the drivers side. None on passenger. Had the hole but never had one attached. I rode around and drove these trucks when I was young. I heard them called that but never really knew why. Seems like a regular truck

Re: DD letters on a '60-'66 Chevy/GMC VIN tag

What I ment to say was that they may have been special order trucks not to one specific dealer (sometimes what you type is not what you were thinking)

I don't think that applies to any of the older VIN numbers since they changed them. ALL the old parts manuals refered to the GM part and would say ie) (except Double Duty) which meant it did not fit.

Re: DD letters on a '60-'66 Chevy/GMC VIN tag

My 1966 has the DD and it was a special order K15 4X4 Cab & Chassis by the State of California. Dont know if this helps but there has to be a link and reason some have it and others dont.

All of the trucks I am referring to, have factory beds on them, with all the standard rear frame rail brackets, holes and bed stand-offs, so this is not the case. None of the rear frame rails have been extended.

Passenger side sun visors were an option and many trucks did not have them from the factory. The cab roof will have dimples from the factory, in the correct locations, in order to install an passenger side visor.

I am hopeful there is a reference to the DD in the GM literature, so we all know for sure.

I was just refering to the trucks I owned not all the trucks. Like I said all the old parts manual called it "Double Duty"

There is a address you can go to at the Vintage Gm site and email a group of older GM retirees that volunteer to answer Questions about GM vehicles. I emailed them an I will post what they Reply

I did answer elsewhere a comment. perhaps it could have been for a customer order and dated delivery. ones that went for dealer inventory didn't have it . could explain random showing
