1960/61 is it worth the work?

Hello,

I have a chance to acquire a 1960/61 Chevy truck for next to nothen, however the outer skin of the roof has been removed some time ago. I have not been able to locate a replacement outer skin for 1960-66. The only option I can think of would be from a doner truck. Other then that the truck looks to be fairly complete and rust free. Is there a replacement skin made? Has any body ever replaced the outer skin on the roof of one of these trucks and is it a mojor job? Is there a reason this replacement skin not made?

Thank you in advance.

If they did it right you should be able to just spot weld a new(used) one in along the drip rails where the factory spots were.
I would inspect the roof pillars and whereever all the water has been draining to over the years.
I would expect you could find some one to sell you a roof off a rusty/junk 60-66 relatively cheap.

not made yet, because it is probably one of the only pieces that is good on almost all 60-66's, and because the size of the die used to stamp it would be cost prohibitive for a marginally desireable reproduction part.

Welcome to the forums from Kansas City, KS. As jon stated above, donors can be found, because this portion of the roof is usually still intact and redeemable. Good luck...if you were closer, I could help you with a good, used, rust-free roof cap, but shipping would be considerably more expensive than the cap itself.

Welcome man! And as far as whether or not to get it, I'd go with it. The missing cap does pose problems but definitely check it out and put some serious thought into getting it.

Old custom classic trucks have soul. Their dashboards aren't plastic, and they've survived both the best and worst of what the 20th century had to offer. For the owners of these trucks, it's often the same story. Through both good and bad times they persevered, until one day they could turn the key and roll up in a customized truck everyone with good taste would admire.Custom Classic Trucks

Get the truck. If it's next to nothing price wise, how can you go wrong?. C&D Salvage in China Grove has a few of these trucks. Most had decent roofs if I recall correctly.
