Re: tires

1 ton axles? I assume a 14 bolt rear, but is the front a D60 or just a D44 with eight lugs? 1 tons came with both in the front, I believe the D44 is the most likely in a normal 1 ton, the 44 is much weaker and will make a difference in how strong your front axle is. If it's a D60 front then I don't think you'll have any trouble with 44s and a bit bigger, but the gears will start to feel it. I feel like the weak spot in your setup is the 203 case. JMO.

Re: tires

The biggest problem with the 203 might be the chain. I have seen nud boggers beat 203's for years and they live longer than the 205's. I'm guessing it is because the chain in the 203's absorb some shock load where as the 205's break parts because it is direct out. I'd say that if you have a D60 in the front you could run 44's. It doesn't matter what tire you put on it because things break no matter what.

Re: tires

The front is a 60 and the back is a 70 I thank, was told by the 4x4 shop years ago;that the axels were bigger than a 60 so do not know what that would be.the front and rear end came out of a 78 1ton that came from the gov. so you never know what it would be but I know there big. My biggest thing is not to put too big of a tire on it. I do wont it to get out of its own way.And I was told that the trans.case was gear to gear but have never opened it up to see.I know that a 205 is have had one apart but the 203 is bigger than my 205 I have so I thought it would have to be gear drive too.I do know the truck it came out of was full time 4x4 and my father had to add the lock out hubbs to it.

Re: tires

no lift yet and by get out of its own way wont it to have power. I hate when some one puts 44's on a truck then has to drive it in low to get around

Cool Re: tires

The axles out of CUCV's (military chevy's) are 14 bolt rear (usually with a locker) and Dana60 front (usually a posi) there are undoubtedly some variations. i agree with 38's

Re: tires

the standard cucv had open fronts. the radio units and ambulances had front trac loks. And i dont ever recall a 1 ton chev with a front dana 44. Its pretty easy to find out exactly what you have just by looking at it. Google a pic for a 205, easy to identify. same with a front 60 and 14 bolt rear.

A 60/14 bolt combo will handle 44's if your easy on the go pedal and arnt packin a bunch of power

The front end has not been changed my father got the truck from a Gov. auction. And we never changed it and have had the truck in 4wd. On and off road all the time worked fine. Have the tranny and t-case in the 1/2 ton truck now and it has the same grears front and rear. If I'm not in sloppy mud the front and rear fights its self. Thats why I'm going to put the 1ton running gear in my stepside. So I can use the 4wd and that why I thank I'm stuck with 4:56 gear. Unless I change the tranny and t-case out out.
