Took the Shortwide For a Ride

Here I am driving around in my Sons 64 Shortwide and I decide to pull into the Local Human Bean Coffee Drive Through. I pull up to the window were there is not enough room for me to get out of the truck, Luckily my Son was with me and the Horn Sticks On (DUAL EXTREMELY LOUD HORNS STUCK ON) and the Girls in the Coffee Shop start laughing their backsides off. Well after I got my face back to a shade of other than the same red as the truck I then remember that the horn relay is now in the Fuse Box rather than under the hood where my Son is trying to find it with me yelling at him. This seemed to me like an eternity of people driving by looking at my nice truck, laughing their butts off. Well I figured out what was wrong with the Horns and it could have been a huge major problem (Mechanical Steering Issue). Its fixed now and hopefully this doesn't happen again. So much for a non stressfull drive in the ShortWide.

Man, that sucks big time. And it's definitely a good thing that you didn't have dual train horns like Joey. I bet your son could have kicked you for that one.

GMC calls them "wideside" and "fenderside."

Hilarious story!- I did notice there seemed to be a drive through coffee place on every corner when I visited Oregon last summer.

When he refers to it as ShortWide he is only shortening it from Short Wheelbase Fleetside. The GMC bed's were called Wide Side(Fleetside) and Fender Side(Stepside) back in the 60's as they were termed by the manufacturer. It's simply just a term that quickly describe's what you have and was what it was known as in a kind of spoken shorthand.

No problem man. Did you forget to snug up the bolts or what?

A little worse than that. When we welded the joint on the steering column it must have been a cold weld and it seperated, but luckily not all the way. Today when we got home from the Horn Incident we drilled a 1/4 inch hole through the steering column and put a bolt in it so it wont come back apart again.

I guess this is part of the shakedown that the truck needs being its been setting for 4 years. As long as I keep learning and dont repeat these kinds of mistakes everything will be ok.

Short = short wheel base = 115"
Wide = fleetside
Long = long wheel base = 127"
Narrow = stepside

I have heard them called "long narrow" and "short wide". I think it depends on where you are located. The Aussies and Kiwis say Chev instead of Chevy or Chevrolet.

Re: Took the Shortwide For a Ride

One Thanksgiving a few years ago, we were driving to my aunt's house for our big family get together, and pulled into the neighborhood right behind a cop. As we went over the first speed bump, something wiggled loose in the horn button, and the horn started beeping with EVERY tiny bump we went over. Over the next minute or so, it goes worse, and the cop right in front of us probably thought we were crazy. Luckily, he didn't pull us over.

Needless to say, I disconnect the horn when we got to my aunt's house.

Bluesfella,
Its kinda funny that you wrote this because we were heading home from going to the auto parts store and my Son had mentioned that we had followed a cop almost all the way from where we were to the Human Bean Coffee shop we pulled into where the horn started blowing. So, I guess it could have been worse. Maybe the Cop in front of you had a similar incident happen to him. Either way its funny. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Took the Shortwide For a Ride

There is one thing I forgot to mention. Just before I turned into the Human Bean where all this happened I was in the left hand turn lane and right across from me was a 1969 Chevy 4X4 completely restored and looking great. So of course we were giving each other the thumbs up and if the horn would have stuck at that point I think I would have been even more mortified by the event. Luckily he had already turned the corner and was gone. The Chevy Gods were smiling upon me in that instance. Only the Coffee Ladies and the passer by's were privy to the incident. My Wife stopped by the same Human Bean this morning and the Girls up there know her, I guess they are still laughing at the my Red Face and Embarresment.

If you cant laugh at yourself who can you?

Re: Took the Shortwide For a Ride

Don't listen to these guys. "Shortwide" is exactly the right thing to say, because it rhymes with "ride". Sometimes you have to take a little artistic license when you're a wordsmith.

And your story is hilarious, by the way.
