Warn winch question?
Anyone have this model of Warn winch? What are they worth? This one is on a truck that's up for auction, but they claim it hasn't been used in 10 yrs. and is locked up. It looks good. Any ideas on what might be wrong? Thanks, Sharpie

Re: Warn winch question?
That winch is very desireable. I think it's model 8274 or something closed to that. The four wheel drive magazines used to rave about great they are.

Re: Warn winch question?
Yeah it's an 8274. I've got one & love it! They are very strong & reliable.
Found mine in a local trading paper a few years ago for $150 (the controller & cover were homemade by the PO & had no cable, but it worked); I've seen them go for up around $400 though. Not much inside them to really go wrong & if it is they're easy to work on. That one you're looking at appears to be in great shape! Here's a good tread about rebuilding one http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/8274/ I had to put a new bushing & big oring in mine (but still leaks around the spool sometimes) & got the parts here http://warnserviceparts.com/m8274.asp . The solenoids are basically just a Ford solenoid you can get at most parts houses, it's usually one of those that's the problem.

Re: Warn winch question?
Only thing that sucks about that winch is it doesnt free spool. my buddy just sold his dad's old one for $300. His dad has a picture of his blazer hanging from a tree from it in the 80s. Its a pretty serious winch.

Re: Warn winch question?
Again great winch. I had one on a '95 F350 CC diesel and that winch could drag the truck with the brakes on. I think it was rated at something like 9000# but I also think that might be conservative!

Re: Warn winch question?
a few things... they pull very hard and are very fast ie watch your fingers !
2nd if its that old the brake material may just plain fall off the first time you use it and it will not hold a load until its replaced. . Most likley just some bad connections in the controller just it right to the motor to verify motor is not locked up. They can be rebuilt but thats another $80.00 Warn still; carries all parts to service this unit.

the 8274 powers in and out and also free spools (well maybe not "free"). In the OP's pic the black knob on the top left of the winch disengages the pinion gear and allows free spooling.

Re: Warn winch question?
8000 lb single line pull @ 73 feet per minute. I just ordered the lower case and brake rebuild kits for $142.00. Mine is an old one but the Warn guy told me that the parts were the same for all years. It's about $2100.00 new. Great winches!

Re: Warn winch question?
I don't think you should. Just for the lubrication. I could be wrong though. I'd call Warn just to be sure.
Here's mine all rebuilt with a new solenoid pack.

Re: Warn winch question?
Would this winch work good on a crew cab longbed truck. Does it got enough pull to work well?
