How many gallons is the stock fuel tank?

I am wanting to remove my stock fuel tank on my 71 GMC. It has a second saddle fuel tank that I plan to use instead of the one behind the seat. How many gallons are each of them? Also is the saddle tank a factory upgrade or a dealer upgrade? It is located right behind the cab on the outside of the frame and you fill through the beside.

Re: How many gallons is the stock fuel tank?

I think both are 20. I have TWO saddles right now plus the cab tank. For those long trips... I'm kinda debating on what to do with them, either go with one saddle or install a blazer tank.

all the books say about 21 gallons, but more than a few left with 17 gallon tanks in the cab.
The saddle tanks were usually dealer installed pieces, but there were some factory installed... is it listed on the SPID?

All the many trucks I`ve had have all been 21.I`m not sure why any would be less, but I believe it.It`s just not like GM to do that, either.

The SPID is missing. I have seen a couple other trucks with the same style saddle tank.

if there is a square usually alluminum door on the bedside, it is installed after assembly, usually dealer, but some camper places had them too from what I've been told. If it has a filler tube with round cap poking out the bed side, it is a RPO tank.

The filler neck looks exactly like the stock one. What does RPO stand for?

There were no factory auxilary tanks available in`71.In`72 there was a left side tank in front of the rear tire. There was a rare rea mounted auxilary tank fond on some`70s.I`ve only seen one.

Re: How many gallons is the stock fuel tank?

Yes, and a valve on the floor right beside the seat to switch the tanks. I don't have 72 doors but that who's to say the door were never switched out. The title says 71 also.

Re: How many gallons is the stock fuel tank?

I only have a 16 gallon tank. Is that even possible or should I check next time a fill up?

My '70 owners manual indicates a 20 gallon tank behind the seat.

Like i said in the second responce, some have smaller tanks in the 15 - 17 gallon range. I've seen all 3 numbers claimed.
