1997 z71 transfer case question

I'm not too familiar with 4WD, When I shift into 4HI,OR LO it doesn't engage. The light on the switch flashes. It does make a clanking noise when engaging it, kind of like a bad u joint when shift into gear. I dont want to offer too much for this truck if I have to rebuild the transfer case, It is a hi mileage truck, but seems in good condition other than this problem. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks.

Re: 1997 z71 transfer case question

Could be the front axle vacuum actuator or the vacuum hoses themselves.

Oops, I was thinking small truck, do the full size IFS trucks use an axle actuator as well?
