Kick Panel Speakers??

Anyone running the kick panel speakers?? I was going to try and make my own but i dont know, i know i can buy some from the truck and car shop with speakers in them for 125 but im looking to find some without the speakers in them since ill be putting kenwoods in them. Anyone have pictures of how they fit and how much you got them for, did you have any clearance problems mounting them or anything??

Knowing the cost of fiberglass resin, the time involved, and the expected errors, I'd buy a ready made set. I've built a couple sets but only because aftermarket units were not available.

I had a link that showed step by step how to build them but I can't find it. Sorry, I didn't fully read the previous link before I posted it.

that link is great, well i was thinking of using mat or fibers or any of that, over at school my shop teacher in street rod uses cloth from like walmart and makes the bases out of wood and all that but he uses polyester resign. then he sands that down and uses polyester filler to smooth it out and paints it. He says its not a hard process so im going to write down a list of what i need and have him check it then i might try making my own here at home or at the shop. But i dont know yet still looking for ideas

Yea, the fiberglass is certainly not hard to do if you have some good direction, just stinky and messy. If you have some time check out this fourm http://fiberglassforums.com/ there is LOADS of info on it. Just search kickpanels, or go to the audio panels section and browse a bit. There are some gnarly beginner projects, and some primo looking projects there. i have spent many hours on that one for info and inspiration.

yea i've heard its not hard just messy and the fibers make you itch when you sand it, thats why i was thinking of using the polyester resign. The way i would do it would be build the base and the hole for the speaker out of plywood, then you lay over the polyester material and staple it down to fit the shape you want, after that is one you mix up the polyester resign and lay it on and let it harden, when it hardens you sand it down a little then lay over some polyester filler and smooth it out, then your ready for paint. I would be using any fiberglass mat or cloth at all. Do you guys understand what i am talking about??

If you want to make your own it is pretty easy to do, start with a piece of thin wood... hdf is nice cause its really hard but if you dont have a airgun to shoot staples is hard to use but panaling will work to.......cut out a piece so it matchs your body but dont make it snug make it so theres a 1/4 to 3/8 gap around the floor and where the weatherstriping goes......then cut a circle just a little bit bigger than the size of the speaker grill.....the ring you cut out the speaker will mount right to this you can cut the middle out befor or after you fiberglass the panal I always cut out first.....after that you have to aim the ring in the direction you want it.... u can use screws or small bolts... I use small 1/4 bolts 3 bolts and 3 nuts per bolt one mounts on back side of panal one on the outside and one under the ring the run bolts in so you get the right angle you want......now you cover it, I always use grill cloth its cheap and streches easy but any cloth will work even an old t-shirt.......lay cloth over ring so there is enough material to around hole panel....staple to ring all around......then pull material trying to keep it as tight as u can and staple to back side of panel use alot of staples there cheap.....then mix some resin......small batchs go along way try not to put tomuch on the first time cause it will make the fabric sag.....buy extra hardener but dont make it too hot cause it can make the fabric smoke and maybe flame and mix stuff in thick plastic containers not plastic cups or coffee cans work great to and use old or cheap 1.00 brushes cause one use is all your getting....after first coat is on make a small hot batch and start spreading it evenly over and over till its all gone then dry and see how hard it is if still flimsy get some fiberglass mat and cut in to small strips and make small batch put thin coat on and lay strips and brush resin over and repeat if needed then sand spread some puddy over it sand it then you can paint vinyl or carpet sorry so long got alittle carried away

wood for panels.....one gallon of ressin some extra tube of hardener.......grill cloth or something to cover panel......fiberglass mat pack and some puddy Bondo brand makes all of this stuff besides wood and grill cloth hahaha and I know when I did this stuff all the time you could get it at wal-mart if you got any Q? I can try and help

the mat is what gives it strenght and it not really ichy but the resin does stink and where some latex gloves cause that resin is hard to get off and when it gets hot it burns......bondo does make a mesh mat but I think is harder to use but its not like the fiber glass......you should put something in it cause its like rebar in concrete

I went to the door, to get better sound. The kick panels are too restrictive and the speakers get the crap beat out of them there. The top speakers has a cover that goes over them, so they are not just sitting out in the way. The little black spots are holders for the cover

i dont want anything on the doors, i just like the kick panels, think it looks good and itll sound good also.. im going to try and make my own well see how it goes..

It depends on how you prioritize the drawbacks of the different locations.

Doors have the advantage of having a large area behind the speaker, and since most automotive speakers have a high qts, the door makes an appropriate location. Midbass should be smooth and well balanced. The drawback to the door is that by pulling the speakers farther back, your path lengths are unequal with results in lesser imaging quality.

With the kick panels, you have a tiny tiny tiny airspace behind the speakers, which can make a huge midbass bump in output, which sounds very unnatural. This can be mostly equalized out, and can also be minimized with very careful speaker selection (low qts speakers). On the positive side, you push the speakers farther forward, which helps with path length equalization for better imaging.

If you just want a simple setup, most often your best sound will be in the doors. If you're willing to go the extra mile and experiment with placement and are willing to do some spectrum analysis and equalization, you'll get superior results with kick panels.
