How would one make this?

I really like the fact of shaving out the tailgate on these trucks. Because I don't exactly like the look of the bed's with roll pans on them. I don't like the lip that goes around the entire back portion. So how would one go about making something like this?

i think, unless your really confident in yourself, take it to a body man and show him those pictures and give him your insight on what you want done.

Yea how would they do it though? Like put it in one of those machines that has a pattern and presto? And would it be a skin I would have to weld in?

Well honestly I think the guy in the pool is scarier than the two trucks.(Gawd, I hope that's not you Brewski). Does anyone else share my opinion.

Sort of a bad pic, but here is my truck. The previous owner did it as a project while he was in body school. He said he welded the end gate in then formed metal over it and welded it in.

Brabra, if your were to have that done for you it would cost you a fortune. If yu can weld it yourself it would still be very expensive. It would be something that would take a ton of time, effort, and cash to make happen. You would most likely redon the entire skin on your bed or even make one from scratch. If you want something that radical I say go for it, but be prepared to work your butt of for it. Good luck.

Well Jmanz, I'm ready to spend a fortune and such, because I want a CUSTOM truck. Therefore it may cost money or time... or elbow grease. I don't yet know how to weld, but next year I'll be a junior and I'll be able to go to the Vocational school and take welding. I want to do most of the work on my truck by myself, except for probably paint and upholstery.
Nova_Cobra64. I do like that rear end, but I want that part that is flat on the back of your truck to be smooth and blended into the bedline. Your truck is KOOOL though. Just not my style.

There are companies that make "smooth tailgate skins", maybe Sir Michaels. That would be a start. Then get a roll pan and weld up all the gaps. Just thinking.

If you look at the 2nd pic I posted, you can see the contour of the body line, I like how this was done. I wouldn't have the slightest clue about how to go about doing this. Chevy2Racr, that skin is very close to what I'm thinking, but I'd like something a little more rounded. Thanks again.

That's alot of sheet metal forming. Maybe get one of those smooth tailgate skins and a rollpan as mentioned above, then sculpt it all together with fiberglass?

Boy,that's a real radical truck but if that's what you want go for it if you do the work youself you could probably get it done for less than 75thousand but i'm just wondering what happens when it rains

No I don't want my truck to be like that one, just the rear of the bed. Well he's probably in a place where it doesn't rain much.

Brabra,
Ok here are a few ideas for you. First you have the right idea about Vo-tech and Welding class. But check autobody out also as this might be the better class to take to work on your truck. Then as others have said get a smooth tailgate (or the patch panel to smooth it out) and a roll pan. Then using either parts from an old bed side or tail gate cut and weld in pieces to fill the tail gate gaps. You might be able to push the gate to one side and weld it flush then only have a gap to fill on the other side.

The tail lights are going to require coming up with a shape you want then cutting out the pattern in a panel then welding it into place.

Here is another idea that goes along with Vo-tech class, find a local body shop that you can co-op at (School credits) that sepcializes in Customizing. Not sure what there is around Grant/Kenton Counties but there should be something near Cincinnti that does this type of work.

I took a night class at the local vo-tech in Lexington several years back to work on my truck. It gives you a shop, tools, and someone who knows how things are done. The best thing I could have done is get someone to take the class with me (I did not do this). Two people can get a heck of a lot more done in the same time as one person trying to do everything theirself. Plus it gives you a friend to bounce ideas off of. Yuor attitude about class will go a long way toward talking the instructor into letting you bring your own project in to the shop. Have drawings of what you want, and notes on how you think it you can do it. Good Luck !!

its all fiberglass and would be a heck of a lot eaiser than welding.

what i want to do is use an 88 - 98 bed with 72 bedsides. i want to keep the late model taillights and backend. it's a lot easier to smooth. i haven;t quite figured out how i'm going to do it yet tho.

its the way to go if you got money...only down side is they don't weigh that much you may have to put counter weights on the axles...or somin like that so you get some contact with the ground when you punch it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll probably just find some way of doing it, probably something along the lines of welding in pieces from the bed that I think will flow. Thanks for the thoughts.
