Engine Temp for 350
Just got the new engine on the road. Running very well. I want to break this in right, but I'm maybe a bit too concerned about the temp. readings. I am hoping that 190-205 degrees is about right for a 350? I've got stock rebuilt heads on a new crate with a edelbrock 4 barrel, and a 700 R4 behind it. Also have 4 core radiator.
Any suggestions would help, it is in the 30's here temperature wise and not sure how it will do in the summer. I do know that these things can get hot, just not sure how hot. Thanks as always, '70GMCStep '65 Chevy C-10  '70 GMC Stepside

190-210 is okay for a 350. Engines tend to run a little hotter during break in. IMO you're fine. Good luck and keep us posted...

 some newer engines are even designed to run around 210 degrees for emissions. 190 is a normal temp for a small block and 160 is the coolest temp i recommend. try not to run at a constant rpm or load during break in. ease into the throttle, then cruise a bit, then ease back in, then cruise. basically drive like a person would that pisses you off when you're following them

Yep - my Mr. Goodwrench did the same. Got a little scary in the drive thru a couple of times, but once I got about 3,000 on it (using a 180 degree thermostat - with a small bypass hole in it), it stayed between 170-195 degrees, even in the heat of July here in SoCal. Just don't go cheap on the thermostat (get one with the canister type bottom) and you'll be very happy.

Hello, I have a .060 over 350 in an S10 with a 165 thermostat in it. I am running one 16" electric fan that is pulling instead of pushing on a three core radiator. My motor has never gotten over 185 degrees even during the break in. I run an additive called water wetter and I really think that is why it runs so cool.

205 is perfect for break in and if it says below 210 in the summer the fuel milage shoulsd be better. The old school 160 stuff is just that old school it makes more power if you are sucking air from under the hood but burns more fuel and leaves more crap in the oil. Rads last longer with at least 25 % antifreeze but water with wetter cools better
