Tailgate with band question

Does anyone here have their band off their tailgate? Could you give me some help with the dimensions for the mounting holes? If I have to I can do a rough alignment but I was hoping some one would be able to give me measurements off their gate where the holes belong. Thanks!

what year truck is it Bob? I have an 84 that has a band on it at one time and now's it's removed, so I have easy access to the holes...if someone doesn't help before I get home, I'll go ahead and take some pics and pull some measurements

Re: Tailgate with band question

When I took the band off my tailgate, there were 4 screws. We put a little dab of white caulk on the tip of each screw, and then we lined up the new band and touched it against all the screws. Now, then new band had a little white mark on all 4 perfect spots where we needed to drill the holes.

This was a '78 K-10. That method might help you.

Thay was the method I was going to use if I couldn't get some dimensions. As I recall from the one tailgate I did see with the band off the holes are slotted left and right of the center point for misalignment.

While I got your ear there seems to be a lot of guys on here from Indy. When the weather gets nice we should meet at a cruise night.

Cool, I didn't notice you were from indy.
If you need help with your truck, or you need to buy any toys for any vehicles for that matter, look up Sinister Autosports in Indianapolis. I don't work there, but I'm part of their "club" so to speak, of people who mod their vehicles and go to shows.

I'll see you around the board.

Re: Tailgate with band question

here's the pics and measurements...the holes are in the up and down center of the recessed area...I took the tape measure and hooked it on the left side of the tailgate and took the measurements...and I took the tape measure and hooked it to the bottom of the tailgate and pressed it into the recessed area like the last photo to get the measurement...none of the holes looked slotted to me, but I guess you could do that to help line it up...need anything else let me know...

Re: Tailgate with band question

I just put lumps of playdough on the tailgate approx where the holes should be and then placed the band over it and pressed it down. then when I took it off there where raised places where the holes should go. then I just drilled right through the playdough into the tailgate.

I reread what I put and I left out a step. I didn't actually drill right through the play dough, I used a punch through the play dough to get my center hole and then got the play dough off and drilled em out. glad I caught that because you'll never get the hole in the right place of you don't use a center punch first. plus if you don't drill through the play dough it won't have metal chips in it and you can give it back to the kids...lol
