1962-66 hood lower repair panel

you guy's may have already posted this on here,but i was thumbing thru a new truck magazine today and seen that lmc truck parts have the front lower complete hood panels where the parking lamps go.it is the full lower front panel like the original hood.it listed for $189.95.thought they would never come out with that part.now alot of those old rusty hoods can now be saved instead of scrapped.the upper front repair panel has been out for awhile,but its always the lower section that rots out.

Wow,this is great news! i was just looking at my hood yesterday wondering how i was gonna fab up patch panels for that radius curve on the front lower part, also along the bottom lip. Looks like LMC will be getting more of my money!

I was just at the Moultrie Swap Meet yesterday and bought what I thought was the panel you are describing. Unfortunately, I did not open the box until I got home (Saint Petersburg, Florida) and found that I had actually bought the hood panel that is right above that vertical panel that includes the parking lights. Hopefully Obsolete Chevy will take it back.

Good news, bad news type of thing. If you're hood is rusted bad enough to need that panel, chances are the bracing underneath is rusted just as bad (front and/or back). Once that starts to go, there's really no fixing it.

Yep, i already drilled out the spotwelds that hold the front underbrace...so i could sandblast the front and back. so i am halfway there. now if someone would make a roofcap!

I wish I could buy just the passenger half of it. I pulled out the front brace to get at my hoods rusted area, I only need to fix the passenger corner. $189 is steep for the corner I need.

Steep indeed...I sell good, used rust-free '62-'66 Chevy truck hood shells for $175.00, plus shipping. Although shipping is a little pricey, they can be palletized and shipped, via truck freight.

Since this part was spot-welded at the factory, the only way, I am aware, to attach it to the hood is to weld it at the seam. Has anyone done this repair? I would like to see some photos of the process and the end results.

I would think that the new piece could be spot welded in just as the origional. Of course this would require removing the inner panel first, and then reinstalling the inner panel afterwards.

I wonder if it looks as bad as the repop fenders? It would really bite to put all that time into the repair and have it look bad.

My inner brace is out and I'm reasy to repair one bad corner. If you guys want to pool up some funds and send me the panel I'll take tons of pics of the repair process.

Tony, do you ever cut up hoods and sell parts of them? I just need the front corner, it has too many bends and curves for me to make in a reasonable length of time.

Good point...this should be the method, since the hoods rust from the inside out, so the inner panel should be removed, so the area can be back-dressed. This would allow the spot-welds to be accomplished.

I honestly think they'd sell more if they also had right and left portions available.
