painting gas tanks

I am in the process of a frame off on my ’79 stepside. It is time to move onto the gas tanks. The inside are spotless but the outside is a little rusty. I have searched the site and can not find anything. What is the best way to clean and paint the tanks. Should I use epoxy primer? Need some ideas

Thanks

Re: painting gas tanks

I just sanded, primed, then painted mine with just regular rattle can paint. They seemed to hold up pretty well. That is what I'm planning on using on my next one too if the weather will cooperate.

Re: painting gas tanks

I have a quart of it at home in the fridge, I was thinking that. What would be the best way to apply it? I did all my cab work with a brush, under the carpet. can I spray it? should I apply another color over them, or leave them the por-15 black?

believe it or not, just paint it on with a brush...when it dries it will look like a sprayed clear coat paint job....its the $hit

i actually painted my utility trailer with it 3 years ago...the sun sort of dulls the paint from being so "shiny", but on a gas tank or frame which dont see the sun, it works perfect...by the way, the utilty trailer aint rusted a bit
