69 GMC parking brake issue.

I just purchased a 1969 GMC K2500 4wd longbed pickup. Truck runs great but needs parking brake working for inspection. Here's the issue, the old cables are cut and tied to the frame. The rear brake backing plates have no holes to accept new cables. The rear is a Dana 60 10 bolt which is for that truck. It has 2" wide brake shoes and the inside of the drum measures 12". I have searched the internet all weekend but can't seem to find any info. Can anyone guide me to possibly changing the back plates or drilling holes for the cables. I don't know the history on the truck. It hasn't been modified and has stayed stock. Looking at the springs and "U" bolts I would have to say the rear is original. Thanks

Re: 69 GMC parking brake issue.

All I can tell you is that someone made some changes to that rear end. The backing plate should have the holes for the cables. Your best bet is to scour the junkyards, ebay, craigs list or check with vendors to see if you can come up with the correct backing plates. Personally, I've never seen any without access to parking brake cable.

Re: 69 GMC parking brake issue.

I have a 68 gmc with the d60 rear, if you would like I could take some pics to show you what it should look like. I am not sure if it makes a difference in cable routing, but I have a hand lever. Is yours a hand lever or foot pedal?

Re: 69 GMC parking brake issue.

Backing plates should be the same. The parking brake was changed to the foot operated one in '69.

My brake shoes are 12" X 2" which is what LMC truck said the size is. When I call an auto parts store they come up with 12" X 2.5". What is your 68?

Here a pic I found on the net on this site http://www.boyandjeep.com/tech-artic...-60-rear-drums

If you go to the site scroll way down and check the pics out. You can enlarge them for a better view.

Forgot to add. Maybe a moderator can move this for you to the off-road section. Lots of Dana info over there.

Click on forums and scroll down to view.

Re: 69 GMC parking brake issue.

My 60 has 8 bolts that hold the backing plate to the axle housing.

I'm not sure, I never measured them. When I bought new ones they asked if I had 12" brakes and they were the right ones. Maybe have them get them off the shelf and measure them, might just be wrong in the computer.
