Rear tow hook mounting (my way)

I mounted up some rear tow hooks yesterday. Just thought that I'd post some pics of how I did it. I know there are questions about how to do it the "original" way and I was wondering too. However, I wasn't patient enough to wait. And from the picture that I saw of the bent frame and use of only 2 of the 3 bolt holes, I thought that I should do it a little different. These aren't original rear tow hooks anyways but really close (they are ones I bought from 72ironmike) The process I used should be pretty self explanatory as you look at the picture, I just didn't get the pictures in order. You have to figure that out yourself

You did a nice job of fabricating on those. The guys with those tow hooks will be excited. Trevor

looks nice and sturdy, I assume that you have no plans to run a reese hitch?

Re: Rear tow hook mounting (my way)

No plans for a tow package. It would be almost as much work to mount as the tow hooks. And I have a receiver mounted on the underside of my bumper. So I'm good to go for now. mike

Re: Rear tow hook mounting (my way)

forgot about step bumpers... reason I mentioned it is because I mounted my reese hitch to that same area.. but i'm running a sport bumper.

Re: Rear tow hook mounting (my way)

Good job looks nice, but one question, does the rear bumper get in the way of the towhooks? I've never seen someone pull anything with rear towhooks and a bumper.

Re: Rear tow hook mounting (my way)

" but one question, does the rear bumper get in the way of the towhooks? I've never seen someone pull anything with rear towhooks and a bumper. "

I assume that the bumper would get in the way if you are pulling from straight on. An angle down towards the ground wouldn't be a problem. But I doubt i'll be doing much pulling with them. To me they look neat and might get used. I will most likely do my pulling with the ball/reciever. They are a unique item that I figured would look good on my 4wd.

I just picked up a set of 72 only front tow hooks the other day on my road trip from Idaho to Arizona for about 1/4 of what they are going for on the board. My truck used to have them since the holes are drilled and i can see where there is wear from bolts around the holes. So i'm pretty happy with that purchase. So I should be ready to do some towing, or get towed, but hopefully not the latter.

Thanks guys for the compliments. mike

Re: Rear tow hook mounting (my way)

One of these days I'll have the OEM ones I have mounted on my truck. So,how were they mounted originally? For some reason I was thinking on the side of the frame. Never really looked into it,but I guess the bumper brackets would prevent that? Were they bottom mounted like this, just w/o any reinforcement?

The GM hooks (very similar to what I have) were used for decades and there was no type made specifically for 67-72 trucks. From what I understand, GM suggested ways to mount hooks in a schematic that was included in the box - I believe it involved the installation of an "L" bracket to the frame. A bracket is mandatory to accommodate the medial of the two rear bolt holes. These were not mounted to the side of the frame from what I learned and basically installed in a manner similar to shown.
