what did i buy?

new to this forum, could use some help.after waiting years for the right truck at the right time, i purchased a 69 longbed c10 a few weeks ago. everything was looking good till i noticed in a parts book that a 1/2 ton 2wd should have rear coil springs. mine has 5 leafs. this seems to match a 4wd. my concern is that the cab doesnt match the frame. would this be a title problem that could come back to haunt me? i found some numbers stamped in the frame below drivers door. 33935807-472 and 7-31-7. do these numbers have any meaning? should i be happy the truck looks nice or did i buy a problem.

Re: what did i buy?

Is it a GMC? They came stock with leafs and a Chevy could be ordered with leafs with 2WD.

Re: what did i buy?

A c-10 could be had either way. Coils were standard on the chevys and leafs standard on the gmcs, but could be had either way. Does your title match the cab and glovebox ID tag?
And welcome from quite close to ya. Eric

Re: what did i buy?

the title and door tag are CE149Z which matches a chevy 8cyl 1/2ton pickup 1969. the truck was part of an estate sale so info is limited.

Re: what did i buy?

As others have said, leaf springs were available on both GMC and Chevy 2WD trucks... I have a SWB 2WD Chevy with leaf springs. As far as the number stamped on the frame, it won't match the VIN... There was only one VIN stamped on these trucks which is on the plate inside the driver's door opening. Also, as too_much_studd said, you will find the VIN is on the sticker inside the glovebox door but many of these are long gone after 40 years.

Welcome to the board!!!

Re: what did i buy?

There is a partial vin on the drivers side frame by the steering box and also under the cab on most trucks. I believe it is like the last 6 numbers on the vin. My 67 GMC did not have a partial vin on the frame for some reason.

Re: what did i buy?

Could have been ordered or changed out. Some 15 yrs ago I saw a complete frame with leaf springs for sale here. Owner said it was from Chevy.

At least in my area, in those years farmers, ranchers and others using trucks for heavy hauling didn't like coil springs. They weren't used to them so they ordered with leaves or bought GMC's.

Re: what did i buy?

I don't think you have anything to worry about.
I have (2) 71 GMC 1/2 tons. One has leafs and the other has coil springs.
They were both made in Atlanta 1800 trucks apart - the leaf spring truck being made first.

Re: what did i buy?

the SN (not full VIN) can be found on the frame... mine is just to the rear of the steering box (as mentioned) on the top horizontal part of the frame, just outside the exhaust manifold.

Oops, I guess I should have checked my spelling first. Oh, well... You've now officially been called a studd on the internet... Could be worse.

I guess mine doesn't match and had heard before that the frame stamping was not something that could be relied on. Good thing there are a lot of folks here with much more knowledge than I have.

Re: what did i buy?

problem resolved. thanks to great advise, i found matching serial numbers stamped on frame by gearbox. now i can get rid of the 5 leafs plus 3 helper springs and get something that wont bounce me off of the seat. wonder what was hauled to need that kind of rear suspension. someday when it stops snowing i might be able to take it for a ride. thanks for all the help.

Re: what did i buy?

are you sure its not
ccs120A then the production unit. Just a wild guess on my part. My truck was missing the door plate and half of the spid, i had to wing it and then convince the police officer that was filling out my tag form. But got lucky they painted on the little blue sticker on the door jamb and i was able to scrape off the paint just after he left. LOL.
Sent you a pm....
