700R4......Advice.

I've got a 700R4 out of a 89-90 4.3 S10. Looking to put it in my 72....
I know that I need a crossmember.
Prolly going to need to shorten my drive shaft.
Maybe different linkage.
Also gonna rebuild the trans and install a shift kit. Get a new torque converter too....

I was lookin to you guys to see if there is anything else that I may need to make this change. Maybe someone has done this already or something like it.... Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 700R4......Advice.

You're going to have to give some information about what transmission your truck has now. There is no way to answer your questions accurately without knowing that.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

Since you're already running an auto trans you won't need a crossmember or shift linkage. Just reuse the original stuff with the 700.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

I used the TVmadeEZ TV cable kit and Torque Converter Lock-up kit from bowtieoverdrives.com

It's been a few years and at least 10K miles, I'm happy with the set up.

I had to get an auto cross member, shorten my driveshaft and change out the yoke, BUT I had a 3spd manual in my truck. Not sure how it would go with an auto already in there?

Re: 700R4......Advice.

If his current TH350 has a 9 inch tail housing it will be the same length as the 700R4 and use the driveshaft as is with no modifications. If it is a 6 inch tail housing TH350, he will need to shorten his driveshaft by 3 inches. Regardless of length, the yoke is the same between 700s and TH350s.

The current auto crossmember and mount will work. He will have to simply slide the crossmember back on the frame rails and drill the new holes where it winds up sitting when the 700 is bolted to it.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

Assuming you have a quadrajet, pick up the correct TV cable bracket for the carb. ( they are made for other brand 4bbls too) TV cable adjustment is critical and you will toast the trans quickly if not adjusted correctly. Bowtie Overdrives has tons of info on their site - good reading before you do the swap.

To add to rsavage's post, you can get the TV cable, brackets, and carb linkage from an 82-86 truck at the junkyard.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

Cable speedo 700 works without mods. If you get an electronic VSS speedo 700 trans you have to buy a pretty expensive converter to make your mechanical speedo work.

you can put gears in it also. remove extension housing, replace drive reluctor with a gear, replace sensor in housing with a gear and drive bushing, and reinstall. tell the guys at the dealer what rear end gears you have and your tire size. they can look it up in the book and get you the correct gears along with the bushing (part that the driven gear fits into. don't forget to get the little clip that holds the drive gear to the tailshaft.

this iswhat I did and I havent tried it yet as its not installed but it wasent a hard job, the only hard part was trying to find a gear puller long enought to reach the factory relucter gear on the driveshaft to remove it. once you take off the t shaft housing, youll see what I mean. Also, is a 700 r4 from a v6 the same as a v8? I thought there was something different about them that you couldnt hook them up to a v8

I haven't done this myself, but I can visualize what ya'll are talking about. If you don't have a puller with long enough jaws could you use a punch and hammer to tap it off ? Or a die grinder to cut a groove (carefully) into the wheel to release the tension and let it slip off ?

Re: 700R4......Advice.

yeah tx, I cut a grove in mine in 2 places and a tap of the body hammer and it came right off but you have to be careful!!!! I almost touched the shaft with the mini dye grinder. the replacements Ive seen are plastic so you have to be careful putting those on as well, light even taps

Re: 700R4......Advice.

personally i would not use a 700 from an s10. they dont have the same clutch count as a v8 tranny. use 87 up v8. stronger trans.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

when I remove the reluctor I start by placing magnets I got from old fuel pumps tp catch the filings. then I use a hack saw to cut a diagonal slit across the face. then it simply sides off.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

The Casting # just above the pan on the passenger side is:
9 THM 0236

Tail Shaft has this # on the side:
8642547-2
It is the long Tail shaft, approx. 7 1/4" long

The drivers side of the case on the Trans has this #:
8663548

Trans has the "K" on the Bell Housing.

Spline count is 27 on the out put shaft.

I would like to see how all this compares to a 700R4 out of a V8 application.
Thanks.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

I am interested in which trans would be the best one to get to swap in. I have a 4 speed, but would like to have an auto with overdrive as I plan to drive it onroad more than off.

Re: 700R4......Advice.

the difference between a 700r4 from a 6 or 8 cyl is internal. v8 are stronger than the 6.

Are we talking the "Gears" being stronger or the "Clutchs"??

I'm wondering what the ideal swap would be, from which? Input?
