Transfer case questions!!!

OK....I am having a devil of a time finding the right transfer case for my 91 burb. I have installed a 1997 7.4 vortec in the sled and am ready to put in a 96 4l80e tranny. I have been looking to trade the current 96 np243-c for a np241-c with a 32 count input spline in which there seem to be plenty of but not with a passenger side drop. And of course I need the passenger side drop. Which leaves me with pretty much one vehicle and 2 model years. A 3/4 ton 1990 or 91 suburban with a TH-400. My question is I see quite a few NP208 and 205's available....I know I would need a adapter plate...but how would I adapt them to use electronic sending for the speedometer on the dash(is there a add-on option) and what else electrical/mechanical is missing from those units that the np241-c has? Sorry if I have confused anyone.....but I am getting frustrated.

Hi, Yes, I am doing a similar conversion and if you go with the NP's you will have to get the adapter kit and mating plate from a 700R4 or whatever that year of NP came with.. In my case I am using a 2004 5.3 because I did not want to deal with crappy gas mileage and the 5.3 can basically do everything I need anyway... So, I then located a 4L65e but discovered like you that all of the tcases are drivers side.. Luckily I had purchased an 84 Blazer's - 700R4 with NP208 case a few years ago when this whole project started so I have the mating plate already that connects them.. Now along with that I still need Advance Adapters kit 5-0405E which I ordered last week and it will be here on Monday... In that kit comes a reluctor ring that goes between the tcase and trans.. The VSS sensor will then connect to the hole over the ring gear (see their website for pics- manual located under 50-0405) which in turn gives out the 40 pulse signal.. Without the kit, your VSS will never get the right signal and thus the PCM will always get confused and never work correctly regardless of how many times you adjust it...

So do yourself a favor, call advance adapters first and ask for Vic.. He helped me, explained everything clearly, and gave me a coupon code to boot. I won't get around to installing mine for another few weeks as we have to test the engine first on a homemade test stand and make sure everything is good before I waste more time installing an engine that may have unadvertised problems... For me, getting the kit was cheaper than startng all over and looking for another set of modern axles with a driver side drop.. I like my Dana 44 so $278 vs. $400 for another axle and another Tcase for $300 makes sense..

Re: Transfer case questions!!!

I have what you need. I pulled it from a 91 3/4 ton Burb with a 4l80 and 241 t-case. Adaptor and tranny. Tranny is the 241 with pass drop and VSS. Will need the VSS sensor, it got smashed moving it around, but the one out of your tranny will work.

Re: Transfer case questions!!!

Let's not turn this into a Want to Buy thread guys.... he's asking for advice, not parts, right?

we all know the rules and you must be a paid subscriber for that.

Re: Transfer case questions!!!

to throw yet another idea. If you can find a dodge divorced 205 then you can run a 2WD trans (4l60 or whatever will match your engine/ecm) and then the 205. i just bought on in WI for $100 and that's my plan.

I too am going the divorced route with the 4L80E and a twin sticked NP201 for $50 out of an International. Having another driveshaft, mounting, linkages ect. could be too much of a hassle for you though.
I really think that amcgeh01 has your solution. I also had a 98 4L80E that I had wanted to rum a NP205. I called AA and they seemed very familiar with the difficulties in that combo and had all the parts and answers that I needed. It was a bit pricey at the time so I never did it but they do have the stuff.

Re: Transfer case questions!!!

I went through the same dilemma. I first bought a np241 pass drop. rebuilt the dana 44 and was concerned about the strength with the BB 427. I decided to go with the BW4401 Tcase from my 95 1 ton donor. I then found a 95 ford dana 60 drivers drop that I am picking up tomorrow.

Don't know if any of this helps.

Doug

Re: Transfer case questions!!!

You can use a a transfer case from a 90 or 91 K5 Blazer/Jimmy. It is a 27 spline pass drop. But you can buy a new 32 spline input gear.

I just put a 241 from a 90 Blazer behind a 1997 4l80E. Another bonus is the Transfer case is already setup for VSS. Only 90 and 91 Blazers had them.

Swapping the input gear was easy and cost $85.
