hey just updating anyone that is interested im in the process of refinishing the front end on my GMC. painting the grill, eyebrows, headlight rings, and top bar bahama blue to match the body color where the original had been black looks pretty good i think. have to finish painting tonight.

can't wait to see it on the truck. Too often when people paint the whole thing it ends up looking funny, like something wasn't taped off going into the paint booth, but your idea may be exactly whats needed for the custom look without going overboard.

Re: 71 GMC painted grill

I saw a really nice green GMC 4x4 blazer today and they painted the grill body color. Looked really nice. Wish I could have gotten a pic, but I was driving.

I would not start with 200, I would start with 600 then work up to 1500 to 2000. Have fun, its a blast!

Re: 71 GMC painted grill

That`s a great detail for a sutle custom "coulda been factory" look.I`ve thought about it.I believe KelsFine69(?) has that look...the Canadian "Special Paint" green truck. It gives a Pontiac vibe I think.I still have one other GMC grille detailling touch up my sleeve I haven`t seen done yet.I`d tell ya,but then I`d have to kill ya.
I think GMCs look outta site in the Monochromatic theme up front, lust like a 67/68 Chevy.68-72 Chevys?...I don`t think so.

Re: 71 GMC painted grill

Looks nice, I just got my grill done last week. Let me tell you, buffing that thing is going to be a BIG pain in the ass. I suggest going to your local Home Depot or Lowes and getting yourself a buffing kit. If your sanding it all the way done past 1000 grit I would only use the white bar. Take your time, don't rush and take a lot of breaks (you'll need them). Not trying to sound discouraging, but I did not have fun doing mine, but I am liking the out come. It was worth it.

OOHH YEAH, HAVE FUN

Re: 71 GMC painted grill

originally i had painted the aluminum sections silver and it just looked like crap. but now i kinda wish i left it the more i think of it. theres no anodizing now so imma have to keep it polished. what about buffing the aluminum to a shine, stripping the polish and clearcoating? anybody tryed this to keep the aluminum from dulling?

Forgive me if I sound silly, but aluminum? Was it different in 71?

I forgot to add...

AWESOME!!! I like that so much, I've decided I'm going to do mine that way. I don't like the all silver look, the black is better, but didn't jive with my vision, this is perfect! Slick ride, nice work.

The brows and top bar are chromed steel.
