new seats rebuild old seat

So I just got a nice wakeup call. I wanted to install new seats in my truck but found out the ones I wanted are around $1200. Not today. So I figured I would drop about $200-$300 and rebuild my existing bench seat. From what I am seeing for new foam and a cover it is about $500-$600. do you guys have any other ideas besides the bone yard. I have a ’79 stepside.

I would hop to the boneyard, and see what you can find. I have a 88-94 bench seat in mine so there are more possibilities than just the stock style seat. You could possibly find some cool buckets too.

Just an idea about the foam, not sure how much your covers alone cost, but foam is cheap and would try not to spend a lot on a kit where they may be overselling you on the foam and the covers too.

Foam can be bought from a variety of sources. One here is a local bed store where they make the beds as well. A friend wanted to restore his hunting/camper trailer beds and they gave him enough scrap to do the job for free except one piece he wanted specific. And that was still cheap.

You can buy the correct molded foam and OEM-style upholstery. Shop around. I was able to just go with the upholstery and re-use my foam. Looks like a new seat.

my uncle is an uphosterer > he says foam has been extremely high past few years because it is a petroleum based product , beleive it or not . Its virtually tripled -quadrupled in price .

the drivers side is sagging really bad on my factory bench. would love to fix it, but not sure if its just the foam or the foam and springs worn out :-/

most likely the foam breaking down. I am a civil engineer and design roads and the cost of asphalt a petrolium based product has almost tripled in the last 2 years, so I believe it. I am going to check with a local shop and see if he can get it for cheap. not going to do it for a while, but just planning ahead.
