hey guys, new to the site, my new project.
Well I got this 73 shortbed from and older guy in north Houston a few months ago, wrecked. Guess I was wrong to think I could fix it back up again. I saw it on craigslist and the pics and description made it worth my trip, got there, and oh chit! the truck got sideswiped and the door got ripped off, that wasnt in the pics.
But it did still run, with a nice newer 350 with a lil lumpy cam, intake, headers, dual exhuast,th400 and 4.11 rear, dual tanks also, so for $600 it was still worth the trip. So we get it home, a buddy had another cab for me to replace it with, but on a truck that was stuck some 100ft back in his yard in the mud. No prob, I had time, so we pulled the front clip and cab and found the steering box barely hangin on the frame and a cab mount that got knocked way back. BUMMER! So now i got this 84 stepside body. Swapped numbers (boy did my dad make me go through alot of bs with the boys at the local police department when he found out), swapped drivetrain from the 73 and got it tagged out and inspected. At least im legal and running, but now alot more money into this than originally planned so budget got stomped on pretty quick. Now i have to get to put the 73 front back on, and the fleetside bed, then drop it. thinkin about some chrome smoothies, but with 88-up GMC caps. btw, tryiin to post pics, this might not happen yet till i figure how to downsize or something... says invalid file Last edited by old Rusty C10; 02-20-2010 at 11:03 AM. |

Re: hey guys, new to the site, my new project.
hopefully you can get some pics up soon. It sounds like a real hassle but im glad youre legal now. The 73 front clip can go on the truck, but youll need the original body mounts and core support mounts from the 64 to make it work right.
You can post the photos to a hosting site like flickr and then link them here

Sounds like you have had quite an ordeal with it, but like you said at least your rolling. As for the budget. Welcome to the club. Fixing up cars and trucks will always have things come up that will take care of your budget. Hope to see some pics soon. Keep up the hard work!

Sounds like an ordeal. But it will be worth it to have what sounds to be a worth while truck. Good luck with the build. And as John said...budgets get trommped all the time. Don't let it get to you.

as for the body mounts, the ones for the cab need to be changed and the core support rubber bushings things all need to be replaced to 73 stuff? I only saved the front clip, so id be buying new ones or pick-a-part most likely ( once I change my rear gears, its quite a long drive and the 4.11 gears aint helpin). but i think i might have kept the bushings from the 73 clip, so if thatll work without changing the cab ones thall be a good thing. i thought the wiring was going to be the worst part tho. |

Re: hey guys, new to the site, my new project.
oh yes and the original fleetside 73 bed had a tailgate ive never seen before. the gmc is small and to the upper left corner of it, not in the center. mine is all beat up and full of bondo so if any of you guys have one extra let me know. think it might be a hard item to find, but not sure, ill check the local yards and see if i get lucky.
