Anyone with Paint Experience?

Im wanting to paint my truck a satin Flat black, but no one in this lil valley even knows what im talking bout. The paint shops say they cant even get it. Where can i order it at? My brother in law tells me to just spray the truck with black primer(which i already got) and then spray it with a flat clear but i aint sure if it'll work. Any suggestions? Thanks

come on? you know your buddy down here in LBK can help you out! i, personally wouldnt recommend spraying the primer with clear, there are 2 ways to go about this, one is a bit easier, and cheaper then the other..the easy way is like s10 fan did, which im not dogging down or anything, because it is a good a cheap way to get a great look, and i think it looks better than "flat" flat looks more chalky, this gives more of a satin "velvet" look, another way to achieve it is use a straight black basecoat, and add in a flattener to your clear, this way, you can actually control how flat you get it, and, can sand, and buff it..

Re: Anyone with Paint Experience?

Black base with a flattened cler is by far the way to go. As Funk said, you can control the gloss; sand & polish it; and you still have UV protection from the clear. So in a nutshell...you have a nicer finish that will hold up better for longer.

Re: Anyone with Paint Experience?

Driveway YOU know better!!!! You CANNOT polish flattened or satin paint!!! Because as soon as you polish, its not flat or satin anymore.

you can the clear if it has a flattening agent in it, the agent affects all the clear, not just the very top, so even if you sand it, and polish it out to get the scratches out, it'll still be dull...

REALLY, You would have to prove it to me. Because you can't tell me that where you polish is going to look the same as where you didnt. And you cant tell me that if you polished the whole thing, that it would look like it never was polished.

i have to dig up some pics of a truck we did, but it is possible, and of course it wont look the same, it will still be flat bbut it will be smoother, polishing is done to remove orange peel, and debris that may have gotten into the clear, the flattening agent change the chemical makeup of the clear, makes it all "foggy" not just the top layer, so even if you sand away a coat of clear, the coat under it, and inbetween, is still flat, polishing wont remove the flattener added to te clear..but it will remove the orange peel and smooth it out

Re: Anyone with Paint Experience?

I would definitely like to see pics. I understand the whole painting thing, been doing it for 21 years. I realize it wouldnt be shiny as un flattened clear, BUT it will still shine. Just look like a dull paint job. Not FLAT like it is supposed to. To me, and remember this is MY opinion, a paint job that has SOME shine, looks like a bad paint job unless the vehicle is tricked out everywhere. Looks like a cheap job with some shiny wheels.

Re: Anyone with Paint Experience?

Brainfart from me on that one guys. I tend to agree with Vintage here. The main thing that makes a flat or satin finish is the lack of light reflecting off the surface. Yes, you could polish the flattened clear but then as said, you would have a milky or dulled down finish. Not flat as intended. On the right color it might work ok but on black, I don't think it would turn out as desired. I think it might be kinda cool as a graphic effect, like on a stripe or something.

Re: Anyone with Paint Experience?

I for one know from experience that you CANNOT wet sand and buff, without bringing the shine back to the clear. Tried that on a Harley tank for a customer, needless to say I tried to wet sand & buff. In the end had to repaint it. So Steel is right,it can't be done, it will shine like new money afterwards

I've got 10 years painting experience, and I have painted about 20 or so flat matte paint jobs on differnt cars and hotrods. You can't buff it! just no way. once you clear it thats what you get. if you run it or get a lot of dirt in it you might as well cut it down and re-clear. If there is such a clear/flatner out there what is it? I would like to know.
