Fiberglass questions

We are about to make a custom speaker box with a amp rack for behind the seat of my Dad's 70' truck. Anyone done this before out of fiberglass? Where is the best spot to get the resin and hardner? Any tips? We will take several pics through out the process and post them on here.

Buy fiberglass resin and hardener from Home Depot or any hardware store. Most paint supply stores will also carry resin and hardener.

Many shops are building speaker boxes with "fiberglass fleece" and pressboard molds. If you have good way to sand concave and convex shapes, this is the best way to maximize air space in behind-the-seat applications.

buy fiberglass mat and the resin,the resin comes with hardner.Any auto bodyshop supplers sell it.Make a mold out of cardboard,use wax paper on the cardboard so the finerglass wont stick to the cardboard.Good Luck

Now just to keep it simple for a one off part (I can go on for hours)

Build and shape what you want out of styrofoam (preferably the white stuff, although the house insulation type might work as well)

Once you have your light weight styrofoam shape perfect you can start laying fiberglass or fleece on it.

You didn't hear this part from me but after the resin hardens and the glass is strong enough, you can chisel large chunks of the foam out and then use a little acatone or gasoline to disolve the rest of the styrofoam.

Tips: Don't let the acatone or gasoline sit too long (it will eventually soften the resin)

i find fiberglass cloth and mat to b cheaper and a larger specilized selection at boat supply places//resin and hardner about the same as autosupply store

To save yourself on the sanding buy some DuraGlas instead of Bondo. You will love yourself for doing it.

Where do you buy Duraglass, and how many coats of the resin fiberglass do you put on?

If you are making a mold of something, cover it with masking tape use Aluminium Foil and some spray adhesive to cover what you molding. The tape makes for easy clean up of the spray glue. Fiberglass wont stick to the foil, will pop right off....

The coats all depend on how strong you want it to be. If it's something like kicks, most people use 1 or 2 coats. Duraglas can be found online, I ordered mine from Amazon. Sub boxes take more.
