4x4 overdrive conversion questions:
I have a turbo 350 backed by a NP205 case. I believe that the 700r4 is based on the turbo350. Does that mean that it will bolt up in place of the t350? What about the 4l80. It's based on the turbo 400 isn't it? Will it bolt up to stuff that had a T400 in it?
What about the manual trannys? What will bolt in place of a SM465 tranny? I'd really like to stay away from paying $1000 to Advanced Adapters in order to get overdrives... ------------------ Bowen '68 K20 fleet '69 K10 swb fleet '72 C10 lwb step '72 K10 Suburban

The 700R4 will bolt to the 350 (motor) but you need the correct foot or adapterfor whatever transfer case you use. The one for the 350 wont fit the 700. It might be cheeper to find a used origanal foot. Advanced adapters wants about 500 for one.

The 700R4 will bolt to the TH350/205 adapter, but the output shaft on the 700R4 needs to be changed. The shaft is relativly inexpensive but the tranny needs to be tore down to install. If you are getting a rebuilt or reman trans from a dealer or shop it should cost nothing to have it installed in the process. The overdrive trans case is just over an inch longer so the crossmember will have to be moved back. For a 4L80 setup you need a TH400 adapter and transfer case. The adapter is available and you can have the front of the TH350/205 transfercase machined to accept the larger bearing for the female input gear and bearing like the 400 model. Couple hundred dollars for the gear and bearing plus machining, also would be a good time to go through the rest of the 205. With the 4L80 setup you use a 2wd tranny with out the tailshaft, the female couling collar used in the 350 application is eliminated. The trans output shaft goes directly into the transfercase through the adapters making for a stronger link. The 4L80 setup will move the tranfercase back just over 5 inches. All the parts are available throuh 4X Heaven much cheaper than AA. See if I can dig up the number.

FYI.
You need to use metric bolts to attach the trans to the transfer case. I didn't and my tranny took a leak in my driveway.
