Power Steering

If I put a MII in my 1950 truck which comes with rack and pinion do I still need a power steering pump

Re: Power Steering

It depends on whether you choose a power rack or a manual rack.

Re: Power Steering

If you have power steering of any sort you need a pump to provide the power. If you have a rack you don't need a box. If you have a box you don't need a rack.

A Mustang II is almost always a rack and pinion, and you can choose power or manual, but once you choose power you have to have a pump.

Re: Power Steering

And be aware that GM pumps put out about 1200psi and the MII racks use 700-800 psi (I think some of the T-Bird racks use a higher pressure). The high pressure differential makes for twitchy steering.

Re: Power Steering

do you think changing the spool valve would let the GM pump work with the Mll Rack?

Re: Power Steering

If you mean the valve at the outlet of the pump where the hose connects...Yes! Borgenin Steering sells a shim kit for about $20. Each shim drops the pressure 100psi.

Just look for a Borgeson-Mullins shim kit #899001.

Re: Power Steering

Hello,

Will the Borgenson kit work on a 2002 LS1 PS pump?

Thanks!

No as they use the higher pressure. There are a few outfits that sell a new reduced pressure spool valve for about 40.00 for running the Saginaw pump with the MII rack.

I'm not sure on that one Cruisinforty but most of the internals of the Saginaw pumps are the same across the board except the spool valve and spring. I went hunting through the net and came up with this.
http://www.hotrodhotline.com/content...ove-components

I think the main difference between pumps is the type 1 or type 2 that Allen Grove mentions.

I have read that that works.
