I'm about fed up with headers. Seems like they always leak. I even bought the copper gaskets and they still leak... I think I will start using the 2 1/2" rams horn manifolds. I only have one truck left with headers on it.

Re: Whats your choice?

I have used headers on lots of vehicles. Never really had any problems with leaks and stuff. They are a pain sometimes to change spark plugs. But headers are usually the first thing I do to a vehicle. I hate cast iron manifolds.

Also with headers... ya gets what ya pays for.

Re: Whats your choice?

It really depends on what you plan on using the truck for. If you use it like a truck use the rams horns they will help keep your part throttle response better than headers. If you use it like a street machine use the headers.

I agree, this is the first vehicle (that was a V-8) I've owned that I haven't put headers on and I don't regret it, I'm so sick of those things, I'll take the power loss in exchange for the loss of a headache anytime.

Re: Whats your choice?

I like the 3/4 lenght headers you have posted install is easy exhaust work is easy and if you have a lowered truck it keeps the undercarrage clean

Re: Whats your choice?

I've honestly had more problems with manifolds than with headers.
When the longhorn gets the 454, it's getting some headers I've had laying around for a couple years.

Re: Whats your choice?

I have always run headers and the only problem i've had is heat on my wires and starter but they make shields for that. I am looking for a set for my BB in my '69 and I'm about ready to just buy a new set from Summit but they are very pricey.

Re: Whats your choice?

I had Try Y's on the Circuit Rider (402 BB)...I went back to a factory manifold, dual exhausts with Spintech mufflers.

Re: Whats your choice?

The guy that rebuilt my motor told me that manifolds produce more compression than headers. I thought he was jive'n me. I will do the manifolds when i re-do my exhaust. i wish i could chrome/ceramic coat them for cheap.

Headers will always outperform manifolds, and have no influence on compression.

The question is, do you care about max performance or not?

I've had 4 different vehicles with headers, and after a good set of fel-pro gaskets, and re-snugging the bolts once or twice after installation, I've never experienced any leaks or blown gaskets.

If something isn't lining up flush to the head, I could see where you could potentially keep blowing the gaskets out, but even the cheap headers should hold up pretty well if you install them properly.

Re: Whats your choice?

Personally i thought the guy was trynah suck all the money out of me. He said he had the manifolds ready to install at his shop. Im no mechanic, but understand how it works. I had to go back to him to put some better header gaskets cuz they was leaking & sounded like crap. Haven't experience any leaks since. IM READY TO GET RID OF THE RUSTY HEADERS though.
