$350.00 for a used rearend!!
I am so pissed about the prices these junkers in Cali are getting for their stuff....350 bones for a rear axle.....****!!......you people in the midwest are so lucky....just for a bedside for a 72 will run you 350 bucks as well.....I'll admit my rearend is like a needle in a haystack to find but this sucks!!
This guy knows how hard it is to find a 5 lug 3.73 ratio with leafs....didn't know I needed such a rare rearend. |

Look for Pick-N-Pull in CA. $90-$120, little higher for disc brake rears.

I wouldn't go there with the '99 rear, WAY too many things can go wrong (ABS on the brakes, but not your truck for one)
I have always heard Memory Lane in the L.A. area was decent, along with the pick-a-part (I think that's the name) was cheap. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. The MidWest isn't any better. A yard 6 blocks away wanted $225 for a 1 legged 3.07. I looked elsewhere and got one for $50.

I sold a 5 lug 3.73 rearend from a 72 for $50. and was happy. I throw 10 bolt chevelle rearends away. I can hardly get $100 on an open 12 bolt chevelle rearend. I'll have rights to your first born if you buy a 12 bolt posi from me though LOL!!. One thing you got to understand is these yards are paying healthy overhead and cars at auctions are getting higher and higher on prices while old car supplies are drying up. I wish I could get 1/2 of what wrecking yards get on some parts and I mean get not ask. I have 2 6 lug coil spring rearends 4 series gears $30 each and don't get any calls. I'm in the Dallas Texas area by the way and there still alot of cheap wrecking yards left. Pick n pulls, awesome auto etc. These places are cheap but they get old iron very seldom. Mostly late model carter cars. Carter cars are junk from the late 70's LOL!!

I'm from the middle of nowhere and have never heard of this Pick'n pull. I hope I don't sound terribly stupid but this must be a generic term for a yard that will let you take parts off. Right? Or it is a franchised bone yard? Don't make fun of me for being ignorant. I'm actually wondering if in the west there are franchised yards!

I always am shocked when I talk to guys from other places that say the wrecking yards in there area will not let them pull there own parts. In my area DFW we have a few big yards that you go in gate and pay a dollar to enter yard, sign a waiver that if you get hurt you won't sue and go pull your own stuff. These yards are usually full of 70's through early 90's stuff, but occaisonally they get some early iron. Now the yards that specialize in very late models like 2000 stuff won't let you pull parts they pull stuff. The great thing about these pick n pull yards is they usually have a sign posted with all the parts prices. So if you were going to buy lets a set of rally wheels for your chevelle you would get rallys for the same price as a regular steel wheel. Where you really get lucky is when you do like i did. I went to a local pull it yard got a set of bucket seats sunvisors ac brackets carb alt brackets all off of a 1970 camper special for $76. The catch is everybody and there mother is scouting these yards daily for early iron stuff. Whats even cooler is these yards sometimes have a $20 all you can carry day, We load up on HEI dist's and 4 core radiaters. The wrecking yard seen is good in North Texas but with the constant invasion of yuppies we are under constant threat of extinction.
I know of a wrecking yard just north of mine i'm building this guy buys any and every cheap car he can get. He owns his own crusher he crushes cars like there is no tommorrow. He crushed a complete 68 cutlas the other day. He has at anytime 10-20 67-72 trucks but he crushes em daily. Unfortunatly this happens alot in North Texas. They cater to Mexican buyers they buy parts and take to Mexico and old cars aren't on their wish list. So crush that old junk make more room for JAp and German junk. Think i'm exaggerating go to hwy 67 just south of 287 and sit by Chapperell steel check out the truckloads of old cars going to the shredder. I cannot tell you how many Chevelles I have seen in the crush pile at a steel yard called LIberty in Dallas. It is sad and they won't sell any parts to you. Imagine if you can seeing a 1972 chevelle 2 dr with a clean pair of bucket seats in it going to crusher I was there they would not sell me ****.

That is a real pi$$er. Here in the midwest almost all yards will let you pull your parts. I'm surprised they aren't scared by liabilty things but most car and PU guys wouldn't sue if they got hurt taking things off. There are always a few bad apples, however!

For the hell of it I phoned around for an open carrier 8.5 inch for my 92, 6 lug 30 spline. I was thinking throw in a EX locker or something( changed my mind on that but thats not in this story). Anyhow one yard waned about $1800 for a rebuilt one. The next yard( my local one) wanted around $2000 for an open diff with about 70000 miles on and no that is not bull****, thats the quote. These yards are stupid, any idiot that pays that should have his head examined, the disc brake equipped Auburn posi and completely rebuilt 12 bolt in the 69 cost less than that and its all new brand name parts. You gotta wonder sometimes though( buckets 92-94 highback Chevies are like $1200 and up). This is Canadian prices I am quoting however it doesn't matter its still ridiculous. You just have to find the right yard and you will be allright( I got a grey set of highbacks that are mint for $650 which was more like it). WHat I am saying is just keep looking and eventually you will find what you need.
