VIN confused

I have a chance at a restored 69 C20 3/4 ton, but I'm confused by part of the VIN. Its a CE239ZXXXXXX. I don't understand what the "3" means. Everything else makes sense; Conventional, 8-Cylinder, 3/4 ton, ?, 1969, Fremont assembly. Anybody know?

Re: VIN confused

That character is the model code.

If it had been a "4", that would mean pickup cab and box.

I noticed the VIN decoder for 67-72 does not list a "3" for that spot, but the '73-87 decoder on another site shows "3" means cab and chassis.

Re: VIN confused

Thanks for the reply. That's why I'm confused. I was expecting it to be a "4". Don't know if I should be worried about buying it or not. Still don't know how to decipher that VIN.

Re: VIN confused

I believe the 3 is for cab & chassis. Another words, it did not come with a bed from the factory (used for a flat bed or something else)

Re: VIN confused

Thanks. Vinwiz.com decoded it as cab & chassis as well. It's just that I never saw that option "3" in the typical VIN ID information. I have only seen model types:
4 = Pickup
6 = Suburban
8 = Blazer

Re: VIN confused

As mentioned, that IS a cab and chassis model. Most on line decoders don't bother with it becouse most people don't build up a cab/chassis truck.

Re: VIN confused

Again, I can't speak for 67-72, but the 73 - 87 the Cab Chassis models were available in three wheelbases:

The 209/309 models have the same wheelbase as the pickup truck;

The 310 model was slightly longer, and there was also a 314 model (the longest).

If your truck is a 209 wheelbase than it shouldn't be an issue. It was simply a pickup truck that came without a box.
