Removing Rear Hangars

I'm going to have to go to the junk yard and pic up some factory hangers to replace the dropped ones on my truck? How hard of a job is it to get them off? Am I right in thinking the factory used big rivets?? Thanks for the info.

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

Are you talking about the front or rear spring hanger brackets or the shackles ?

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

Those are riveted to the frame and some what a pita to get out especially in a junk yard. I ground the heads off my 74 with a angle grinder then drove them out with a drift punch and BFH.

Unless you can get them to move the truck near a power source or get them to cut the heads off with a torch I'm not sure how you would get them out, A BIG chisel and BFH may do it but could damage the hanger if not careful....

Best of Luck !

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

I've been cleaning out my garage, slowly working my way to the pile-o-parts that are un-needed. I may have a set of hangers, but I can't guarantee it. I have not laid eyes on them in about a year.

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

If you make it to the junkyard, make sure you get the right ones, GM changed the shape slightly in the late '90's and the rivet holes are different.

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

Look for drop hangers on sleazebay, there's at least one seller on there that advertises the year break. Seems like it's late in this model...

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

doorman makes factory replacement leaf spring hangers. here is a link.

https://www.dormanproducts.com/cgi-b...rid=0x00438678

i just looked it up using my truck's specs. so they may not be exactly what you need.

it won't give you a price but you should be able to find a local auto parts store that sells their products.

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

Man, ya'll weren't kidding about these being a pain! I found a truck at the yard without a bed and tried to drill out a rivet. I gave up. Still got the shackles so it was still a sucess. I'll order the Dorman hangers. Thanks for the help again!

Re: Removing Rear Hangars

Well, new update. The dorman hangers are for the rear. I needed the front. They are not so easy to find. Latemodelrestoration.com was the cheapest at $99 a side. So....back to the yard I went today. Bought a $14 1/2in. drill at Lowes on the way, took my big drill, and got the hangers off. $5.99 a side. So, for $26 bucks and some sore arms I figure I saved about $175. And it was kind of fun hammering off the heads of those rivets. Good stress reliever!
